Lunar Eclipse (Penumbral not full Eclipse) - Jan 10th
Rob replied to Rob's topic in Celestial Events Heads Up
They do indeed John. We may get a slim pasty salmon as the light spectrum is effected, but definitely no like a full Lunar Eclipse!. That said I see it as kicking off Astronomy for 2020 for me. Reference Info and video : https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/lunar/2020-january-10 -
Wow Stu. Talk about the stuff of dreams... that really looks an awesome setup. The rowan sure looks the business I have to say!. Congrats Sir Rob

MOON 4 DEGREES TO LEFT OF MARS IN DAWN SKY MONDAY - TOMORROW!!
Rob replied to paulastro's topic in Celestial Events Heads Up
I saw this while walking the dog this morning!. Lovely sight, and cracking Earth shine.. -
Oh and Welcome to the SGL family Dermot.

I second John here!.. I have the Bresser 127L, great scope and sits well on my HEQ5. But once you start adding heavy eyepieces, diagonals, finder and so on.. that's it!, I then feel it's maxed out the comfy weight carry. So an AR152 would 100% need a EQ6 to enjoy the scope fully. Yes you could maybe get away with an HEQ5, but I'm sure it may get annoying with regards to shakes & wobbles. EQ6's do come up in the second hand market.. Congrats on the new scope mind! Best Rob

Glad you enjoyed Stu!. I love it there, been 4 times over the last 10 years (with kids too). The festival weekends have a nice atmosphere also. Best wishes for your 50th BTW. Mine too this year (January). Rob

I have them, they work well plus the new hand control over the standard has a much better fit n feel. Rob

Dew on triplet refractors
Rob replied to Richard136's topic in Getting Started General Help and Advice
I've had dew form between the optics, and on the front lens with no ongoing effects. I don't own a dew heater, however like John I also bring the scope into the house after observing. Then once back in the warm house. Leave all caps off, wait an hour (or just leave over night if late) before re capping and storing. Rob -
I literally can echo this word for word John (spooky!). Rob

Interesting report thanks. I've been thinking about the ES range also. I'd like to try one at some point. I have my Meade 82 degree EP's and love the width of field.. can only imagine how nice the extra 10 degree's would be. Rob

Just watched.. and even as an occasional imager felt the inspiration. I feel this applies to all Astronomers .. more so on the last few minutes of the video summing up Astro as a whole! Happy Friday guys! Best Rob

True enough John. My 127-L appears to be a good one, so will stay filter less around 80% of the time. The wratten #8 does boost the contrast on Jupiter, but you have to deal with the strong yellow of course!.. so its in & out quite a bit. Rob

After two sessions with stock 200P - eyepiece upgrade advice?
Rob replied to Deisler's topic in Discussions - Eyepieces
As others have mentioned here. Collimation is your stop!.. If you don't already have a collimating tool, get one. preferably this style as the longer style works well : https://www.firstlightoptics.com/other-collimation-tools/premium-cheshire-collimating-eyepiece.html Then look towards EP's. Best Rob -
I had one of the WO -V filter and found the same John. I now switch between a Baader Fringe Killer & Wratten #8.. that said I often dont use one at all!

Fingers crossed for you all. I could not find camera lens which has been covered in Baader film - Drat!. So its a live feed for me, plus I hope some images on here! Rob

Wow!.. that's some eyepiece. Love to take a look through that. Can Only imagine the 'Space walk' feel from a 100 degree EP!.

Last few questions - about to order 200P
Rob replied to Deisler's topic in Getting Started Equipment Help and Advice
I love my 200PDS, and have had many great nights with it. Its a workhorse aperture, and a real performer. I find its a sweet spot aperture for UK skies as it can still provide pleasing views on mediocre nights of fair to poor seeing. Yes its EQ mounted (did have it on the EQ5 as well as the HEQ5) and yes I'm also a 6ft 3in tall chap who suffers with back pain on/off . But the trick is a lot of tube rotation in the rings to find that comfortable position for observing. Its also the case to plan your session ahead for where your targets will sit in the sky. Its fair to say I've been a Newtonian on EQ user for 25 years now. I've done some light imaging, but mostly observing. I found that I become one with that setup quite quickly, and now (to me) its a breeze to use and enjoy!. Rob
