Recommended Posts

Comet C/2018 W2 (Africano) is the next comet relatively bright which could reach visual magnitude near 8.5 this September. In this image taken on July 7, 2019 has a brightness in magnitude 12 approximately, and a greenish coma with an angular size of 1.5' and a strong condensation.

Comet C/2018 W2 (Africano) on July 9th 2019, showing a coma with 3' of angular size. This comet seems having more activity since some days ago and could be observable with binoculars on September.

Comet C/2018 W2 (Africano) imaged on August 9, 2019 when was passing near star open cluster IC 361, located in Camelopardalis and containing about 60 stars between magnitudes 11 and 18. In this image the external coma appears very faint and with an angular size of only 2 arcminutes, elongated at anti-solar direction (toward west). Visual observations on these date reported the comet with a magnitude arond 11.

Well done Jose, I managed to get my first pic of it in the early hours of the 8/8/19  with my ODK 12. 300s unguided @ iso1600 but it is very very faint indeed and not a lot to see at the moment. Will be keeping an eye on it though and taking more pics .

This comet has a low condensation and is hard to observe. Next month will be more bright and I think a bit more easy.

It's getting to a reasonable height here now so will try for it when the Moon goes away and it stops raining.

Hi Bob, we also have C/2017 T2 PanSTARRS creeping ever higher up the sky during September / October.

Hi Dave, thanks for the heads up, it looks as though we might have some comet imaging to do.

Bob.

2x1 degree panorama with comet C/2018 W2 (Africano) at right showing a diffuse coma with an angular size of 7 arcminutes and a brightness in magnitude 10.5. At left the BFS 31 nebula on ionized hidrogen zone Sh 2-203 barely visible in this image.

Thanks for comments :)
This was some days after:

Comet C/2018 W2 (Africano) imaged on September 5, 2019, with a brightness around magnitude 9.5 its coma reaches an angular size near 5 arminutes, although is extremely faint; only carefully inspecting the image can be seen hor far goes the green luminescence of diatomic carbon.

Comet C/2018 W2 (Africano) imaged on September 21, 2019 when reached its maximum brightness near magnitude 8.5 coinciding with approaching to 0.5 AU from Earth. Shows a diffuse greenish coma with an angular size 12 arcminutes. A faint dust tail extends toward north (to upper) observable because these days we are crossing the orbital plane of comet. In this field slightly smaller that one degree between Pisces and Andromeda constellations highlighs NGC 266, a barred spiral galaxy.
