It's always fascinated me that the light from stars take so long to reach Earth that the events causing them happened hundreds of years ago or more. E.g. Betelgeuse may have already gone supernova and we're just waiting for the light to arrive so we can see it. I first heard about this idea in high school when Sir Bernard Lovell from Jodrell bank came to our school and gave us a talk about it. Amazing stuff. :)
