spillage
Sorry all and please flame me for posting this but I have got myself tangled up in info. I have a 1100d which I can connect to my laptop and use eos utility to control timer settings iso setting etc. I am looking for another cheap dslr that I can butcher to remove the ir filter. I have seen lots of cheap 400d and 350d's available but cannot seem to see clearly if these can also be controlled in the same way. Or would I be better off looking waiting for a 450d or 1000d. cheers Spill.
Chris
I've modded several 350D's in the past, nice cameras with chunky pixels. However, I seem to remember them not being supported by EOS utilities. I think the 450D ans 1000D are, there is a table on the net somewhere which tells you, if I can dig it out I'll post it
Chris
Actually this says Backyard EOS supports the 350D, I would try and find a second reference before hitting the button on a 350D though: http://www.jtwastronomy.com/products/guides/backyardguide.pdf
Brent
I have a 350D. Canon never released any 64 bit drivers for it so you'd need to either be running 32 bit Windows, or a 32 bit virtual machine. Many have had success using a virtual machine but I installed 32 bit XP instead as my netbook isn't very fast and is short on RAM Once that's done it can be controlled in the same way. I use Astrophotography Tool, it does everything I need and much more and the free version includes almost everything.
Brent
By the way, if you particularly want Live View I'd get one of the others you mentioned. It's never bothered me not having it though.
spillage
thanks all for your replies. I just was not sure if I would also need the remote shutter control to add to the costs. I may just sit back and wait for a 450 or upwards to pop its head up at an affordable price. cheers Spill.
Alien 13
Try MPB or Wex for used 450D or others. Alan
John78
You can get a used 1000D for £80, a 350D for as little as £54 or a 450D for £110 instock at MPB. https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-digital-slr-cameras/used-canon-digital-slr-cameras/canon-eos-450d/sku-628203/

michael8554
The 450D is the earliest that has shutter control by USB, the 300D, 350D, 400D will require a serial shutter cable. By the time you've paid for that, might as well buy a 450D and get LiveVIew too. Pretty sure there are some modded cameras on here and ABS Michael
jimbo747
I picked up a 1100d last year with busted auto focus for £70. Was incredibly easy to mod, took about 20mins. Even easier than building a PC.
spillage
Thanks for all your input. I am going to sit back and wait for a cheap live view camera to pop up.
Adam J
You will not regret spending the extra money on a 450D or 1000D the 3rd gen processor is a big advantage as you get full USB shutter control and live view. You get neither with the 350D. Yes BYEOS supports the 350D but only with RS232 shutter control. Also the 350D has problems with AMP glow that have been fixed on the 1000D and 450D. Overall I would get the 450D.
