HEQ5 weird noise

Hi everyone,

so i got my HEQ5 today, set it up, slew and it made a really loud, almost clonking noise at the start, then smoothed out into the normal noise, does anyone know what this could be caused by?

They all do...you get a kond of grindy noise at the start and end of a slew. It can be quitened a bit by tuning bit not gotten rid of altogether.

Yes it's normal. Something akin to a malfunctioning coffee grinder. 

There are several threads discussing the noise from the Skywatcher EQ mounts.

My one is not this bad, yes it makes a bit of noise but nothing alarming

A Rowan belt mod makes them nice and quiet.

Hmmm sounds quite noisy so probably needs adjustment. Mine made a similar sound but not as dramatic as that. Follow Astrobaby's online rebuild. I've done mine 3 times and it's very quiet these days. I also cleaned away all the grease or black Chinese molasses more like and replaced it with Molybdenum grease.

Welcome to the world of grindy gears! Nothing to worry about.  Give it a year and you will have done a belt conversion.

Actually you will find outside it will seem quieter anyway.  It may just bed in with a bit of use.

They do tend to sound a bit grindy from the factory.  Mine has been rebuilt a fair few times and over time I have tuned it to be VERY quiet and very accurate.

There doesn't sound much wrong with that one of yours - pretty standard.
