philipw
My telescope is out cooling, lovely dark clear sky here in Devon.Having only ever looked at the Moon and Jupiter before, what should I try to find tonight?

Luke
M42 the Orion Nebula, in the constellation Orion, you'll need to wait until later in the night! Have you got a star book to help you find it? By about 11pm it should be a reasonable height I would think.
bingevader
Over in the east, rising nicely should be the constellation of Auriga, have a look for some faint fuzzies!M36, M37 and M38, lovely.

Qualia
If the hour is suiting, my advice for the evening would be to take your time and just stick around Orion. There is just so much beauty to see and wonder upon; reflection and emission nebulae and even a planetary nebula, M42, M43, M 78, clusters, doubles, triples, and gorgeous rich star fields. If you find yourself itching to move on from Orion, you could always check out Perseus, Taurus and Auriga, just stick a low mag eyepiece in your 200mm and slowly move across the evening sky; watch how many jewels jump before your eye as you discover M1, M 34, M 36, M 37, M45, M76 (might need a bit of mag), the Double Double, etc, etc.Hope you have a great evening
philipw
I 'think' I've just seen Andromeda. Through my 25mm. It's really bright compared to everything else and seems to have a lot of fuzz around it. Can't see spirals or anything but I've only got very basic kit. It looks a yellow/orange compared to the bright white of other stars?
bingevader
Are you sure it's the Andromeda galaxy? You haven't got basic kit, on a clear transparent night it should look fab through your 'scope and a 25mm EP.Honest, I've seen it through your kit! You are very unlikely to see spirals or colour. It's also massive. What you should see is the brighter central oval region fading out into faint fuzz. And surrounded by fuzz. I think it's Andromeda, It's where Stellarium is telling me it should be!
philipw
I'm looking in Auriga, there;s the bright star Alnath. If I am honest I don't know what I'm looking at. How do I know if I am looking at a Nebula?

LukeSkywatcher
I spotted Andromeda galaxy tonight with my Mkl eyeballs. I was just home at 6pm from dropping my niece back to Dublin and it is a lovely clear but dang cold night. I had previously thought i spotted it naked eye from my drive (even with a street lamp nearby). Tonight i confirmed it. Its very faint, but with averted vision it becomes more obvious. ronin
If you have the Pleiades then sort of left and lower is the Hyades, Aldebaren is the red star sort of in them.Pleiades-Hyades continued along the line gets to Orion when it appears.Try the belt, Beltelgeuese and Rigel when Orion gets high enough.Guess M57 ring nebula in Lyra is a bit low, but if visible try it, actually should just be high enough. Then Albireo. If you know Cygnus then aim at Deneb with a low power eyepiece and you may get the N American Nebula and the Pelican - but the sky will need to be dark.Search Casseiopia and The Plough, may see M109 and M108 close to the bottom 2 stars of the base of the plough.Reckon -4 or -5 here so watch out for getting COLD. philipw
Wow Wow Wow...I think I've just been looking at Orion Nebula. Looks like a cluster of starts in a cloud, with the x2 barlow on there seem to be 3 bright stars within the cloud (?) absolutely beautiful.
