Having a Herschel day

Sitting in the garden reading the biography of William and listening to some of William's music on headphones. Just add a glass of beer and I can think of few better ways to spend my birthday.

The more I read about this remarkable brother and sister, the more I admire what they achieved. As the book says, for William to combine the three skills of telescope making, observing and theorising at that time was a real innovation.

I must visit the museum in Bath sometime

Happy Birthday Kerry. :)

I've read a bit about the Herchel family and have to agree that looking back at what went through and what they achieved was pretty amazing.

You're enjoying the biography then and would recommend it?

Ian - a mere 9 years! Congratulations - almost 44 years here and never a cross word (ahem!)

Mike - only just started the book but good so far - lots of detail. I'll perhaps do a more considered review when I've finished it!

Cheers

Sounds like a great day. That museum in Bath is well worth a visit.

Yes good so far. I don't like ignoring birthdays and always try to do something selfishly enjoyable!

My favourite organisation, the Landmark Trust, have a coupe of properties in Bath and it would be good to book one so that Mrs L can perhaps do a bit of shopping (her favourite activity) and I could visit the museum.

Happy Birthday Kerry

Go a lot of friends staying with us during mine so I don't think I will be able to much of an Astronimical

Nature though seeing stars will probably Figure.

I love reading about all our 17th,18th, 19th century Astronomers and Scientists. The main thing about these

people is that they were the bees knees at Lots of things. Today we are a genius if we can specialise well in 1 subject.

Very nice way to spend some time Kerry

I spent a day in Bath for my birthday back in February and we visited the museum. Fascinating in so many ways and not just for the astronomy links. William and his sister Caroline were remarkably talented people living during some very interesting times.

All in all very worth the visit

I've stood on the spot where Herschel discovered Uranus !!!

I'd also recommend a visit to the museum and like John I stood in the spot where where Herschel discovered Uranus and doubled the size of the known solar system, it was an amazing feeling to be standing there. By chance when I held up my smartphone looking South running my Sky Safari app there was Uranus.... I did wonder at that point what Mr Herschel would have made of the fact that in 5 seconds in daylight I discovered Uranus (again)!!
