Welcome Calvin. Of course a small (or any sized) fortune would come in handy, but it's surprising how much you can do with very little expense. Just look at the amount of good work done by the early astronomers with what we would now regard as pretty basic equpment. Having said that it, takes a degree of self discipline to resist the temptation to keep upgrading.
