We have just booked a Northern Lights cruise for Feb next year

Setting off from Bristol for two weeks. With the solar maximum meaning that we have a better chance of seeing the aurora and also the milky way. The cruise goes right up the Norwegian coast and deep into the arctic circle with lots of stop-offs.

While nothing is guaranteed (the sole reason for going is to catch the aurora borealis and to tick it off our bucket list) we stand a better than average chance of being able to see it. We have done as much homework as we can and couldn't do any more.

Roll on February.......

nice one guys - would love to see the Northern Lights an Arctic Cruise- wow.

Lenny - one of my mates went to Iceland just for the weekend- I thought he was joking but no - cost him about £400 so not out of my reach.

Will be on my list as well - two places that I've always wanted to go - Iceland and New Zealand.

Actually its not as expensive as you think, we paid less than £400 for 4 days and thats with a couple of trips etc etc , surprising the amount of people that have said why are you going there, nothing there is it ? I normally walk away at that point :)

Hope you have a great time. We did a cruise from Tromso in March and were fortunate enough to see the aurora on three nights. An incredible experience and amazing scenery.

Norway is expensive but if you go there it's just something you have to accept

Sounds like the people at SWAF and they seemed good, they had an office in Exeter but I recall their brochure was Bristol.

Somehow I had a good talk, took their brochure and lost everything and as they were both Exeter and Bristol and I think the Aurora aspect was a sub-part of their normal bookings I cannot locate them.

SWAF site has next years event on it (bit too efficent) not this years where I hoped to find their name.

Fingers crossed for you. The lights are simply awe inspiring :)

One thing. Did they say if they provide outer clothing? If they do, then don't bother spending loads on money on ski gear. It just isn't up to it. For our first trip to Jukkasjarvi we spent hundreds on the best ski gear you could buy in the UK and found it totally useless. You would freeze in minutes. The jump suits provided were brilliant. The Ice Hotel staff always chuckle at the guests turning up in near useless expensive ski gear and then decline the jump suit. They always come back for one after a few hours! The 2nd time we just took thermals :)

We're off for an 11 night cruise at the end of December so keeping fingers crossed we get lucky. Working on the basis that by flying there rather than sailing from somewhere like Southampton we will be maximising the chances of seeing first hand this wondrous phenomenon.  :grin:

Thanks for the link but after I saved it I realised I would probably still have to book direct - agents base everything on 2 people, and there is just one of me. Hope that direct to the ferry itself I could book a cabin and one passenger.

Recall a good number of years back I had all the information for a 2 week vacation and found a travel agent localish that specialised in the same place, BVI. I added everything up to about £2000-2500, when they were at £6000 and still adding to it I politely left. Recall they added 70% to the room for single occupancy. All places over there you take a room, same price if 1 or 2 people in it. They reckoned $80 for evening meal every day, so 14x80 was added to the cost - I would have happily grabbed a burger.

See they are in Romford so not the ones at SWAF, but worth keeping for reference.

Guys,

  I've spent many years at sea in the Northern North Sea / Atlantic sectors. Observed 100's of Aurorae. Another much cheaper option is the Shetlands. Though, as you sail to Tromso or Hammerfest, the icy blue skies lead to awesomely crystal clear nights.

  Here's a shot I took whilst at sea. Hope you don't mind posting a pic on your thread.

hoping to emergrate to nz or oz, in the next 2 years
