Star Atlas upgrade

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade the star atlas I use. Currently use Pocket Sky & Telescope Star Atlas. the A5 page one with (I believe) Will Tiron maps

I'm simply looking for something bigger. A4 or even A3 maps. Laminated would be nice.

I love the Will Tirion maps so those again or something very close to those again would be ideal.

The level of detail in the current atlas is fine I think, not looking for much more in terms of magnitude, possibly 2 - 3 more on star magnitudes would be good now I have a much larger scope I can probably see quite a few more faint stars than previously.

Any suggestions? I'd like to keep cost under £50 ideally.

EDIT: Oh and Spiral bound is a must

Cambridge Star Atlas, that's the one I use. I'll post photos for you in 10 minutes.

I was just looking at that one by Will Tirion. Only thing that put me off was the description on Amazon said it was for naked eye observation, binoculars and small telescopes.

The Cambridge Star Atlas is good and is spiral bound

and the author is Wil Tirion, but I'm not sure if there is

It's glossy paper. I'd love to have a laminated version. If it's to me, I'd laminate the mount as well considering this country's weather

Have you considered http://www.uv.es/jrtorres/triatlas.html ? Print the pages you want, at the scale you want, laminate them yourself and gradually build up the entire sky (or as much of it as you want).

I don't think the Cambridge covers stars much below about 6th mag - less than pocket sky atlas. You may want something deeper if you want to find DSO.

Strangely, my Cambridge atlas omits the LINES between stars. For a quick glance, these can be useful?

For FREE, there are Taki's maps. Various formats (A3 even) A bit of "Blue Peter" DIY and away you go?

What about Sky Atlas 2000 it comes in a laminated version with stars down to 9th mag.I own one,it is big but very good.

I wish I could find a laminated field edition of 2000 in this country.best I can find is $120 delivered to the UK :'(

Have you considered the laminated field edition (white stars on black background? Sky & Tel shows $80 for that one. I've used mine for 20+ years after losing 2 unlaminated field editions to dew. Does that go to $120 for you including shipping? If so, that's really sad.

I hope you get this sorted - good charts are really essential!

That's impressive. Due to dew, I DIY laminated my PSA with clear vinyl floor covering from the pound shop.

It now weighs a ton, but can get dripping wet. It's worthwhile, make sure you enclose all the edges as dew gets everywhere, even

That's the one I want

It looks a lot like the Cambridge version except for the lamination.

The Cambridge has stars to +6.5 mag while the SA2000 has stars to +8.5 mag. Big difference.

BTW the traditional quoted faintest magnitude of a star atlas is that magnitude at which the atlas shows as many stars fainter as it omits that are brighter. For example, The Cambridge Atlas will show some stars that are fainter than +6.5 but some stars which are brighter than +6.5 will be missing from the charts. I don't know if that still applies with the computer generated atlases of today.

50mm Binoculars will show stars to 9th mag and fainter.

whats good about it is that all the herschel 400 and messier objects have a star after them on the page and its not too ott when it comes to complexity plus its free to download and mine cost £80 printed on a3,matt laminated and spiral bound.

Bear in mind this is a big atlas it is 600mm x 400mm that's A2 size, so you'll need a good space to lay it out on.
