Solar Filter Ideas

You can use ND5.0 for photography and visual. ND 3.8 is Photo only!!!. I use ND5 for photography and even then I usually have to use the lowest ISO setting and almost the shortest exposure setting available. The old Sun is really bright!!

Same here. To use a webcam I have to use a ND filter or the webcam is overloaded even at lowest exposure and gain. And I use a reduced aperture of about 50mm. The DSLR will cope, with low ISO and short exposure. When I get an Ha filter I'll try that.

Been busy making mine today. Well, except for the film itself 'cos I only ordered it yesterday.

Even made a "pizza box" for it and a stowage point in the box in which I keep my scope, so it should stay damage free for a long lo-o-ong time.

I followed someone's lead (not sure who to credit, but you know who you are) and bought a round 'paper mache' box from hobbycraft with along with some left over camping mat foam sheet (from DIY few shields and shrouds) made a perfect fit filter for my Celestron Travelscope 70. I also bought some larger boxes there which will make perfect end caps for my 200pds and 130 explorers. Each box was under £3 so a bargain.

Go to the hobbycraft site web store and search for round mache if you want to see what they have. This is a direct link to the box I used for the 70mm frac. http://direct.hobbycraft.co.uk/products-Paper-Mache-Medium-Circular-Box-With-Frame-Lid_16338.htm

They also sell compass cutters like this http://direct.hobbycraft.co.uk/products-Inpex-Rotary-Compass-Cutter-Set_14767.htm as featured in this months sky at night, which are handy if you want to cut neat circles into things..

I have made one of those for my ST80 and it works very well indeed. The diameter is a bit big, so I glued in three strips of foam to get a snug fit over the dewshield :)

No idea which one ours is, it doesnt say 5 or 3 on it. It does give instructions for making the solar filter and says its for telescopes, cameras and videos. So far we're sat doing a filter for the scope, then we're going to buy another lens hood for the dslr and make on for that

I'm sure I know the answer to this but got to ask any way! can I use this to make filter(s) for binoculars and if so should they be just taped down or made to fit snuggly?

Hello. I'm getting ready for the Venus transit as well and just got some Baader AstroSolar Film. I intend to make filters for my binos and found this description:

http://www.baader-planetarium.com/pdf/construct_binocular.pdf

However, since I'm not likely to be the only one using the binos, I think I'll make two separate filters instead, using this method:

We made an off-axis one for the 8" and a full aperture for the ETX70. You really have to 'Hunt' for the image in the eyepiece with the off axis so will be using the ETX on VT day.

I made a 75mm off-axis for my 150P. Full aperture is too bright and you don't get the same contrast. The 75mm off-axis gives an unobstructed f/10 and is just wonderful.

Hobbycraft profits must have soared through SGL, just checked their site and the round boxes are all sold out !!! Wonder if I dare suggest some of the items I would like to sell . mmmmmmm !

Very good idea but I made mine for a ED80 from cardboard strips and it fits very snuggley to the tube.
