Hi everyone i have just bought my first scope (skywatcher explorer 130p) with an eq2??? mount. i joined today because apart from the moon i dont really know where to point it although i found jupiter by accident! i thought it was a star . i live in yorkshire in an area with little light pollution so am hoping with a little guidance from some experienced people i'm hoping to get the most from my new hobby.

Hi Mick and welcome to the forum. Well tonight it will easy to spot jupiter again as it's that bright 'thing' left of the moon at this moment! :D

Download Stellarium, it's free planetarium software and once you have input your location, it will show you the nightsky and whats up there.

thanks guys! without wanting to sound a bit dim.... i can just make out 4 "stars" close to jupiter. am i right in thinking these are some of its moons?

'Stellarium' free download and 'Turn Left ar Orion' both recommended, together with perhaps a pocket sky atlas for quick reference while you are out with your scope.

hi mick and welcome. down load stellarium or by an astro mag you will have a map of the nightsky then and you can pick what you want to view

thanks for the pointers everyone. i have downloaded stellarium and thats a really great piece of software and have ordered sky at night magazine from my newsagent. i figured patrick moore must know a thing or two
