A new film is due to be released in September called Apollo 18. It's a found footage-style film set in December 1974, about a post-Apollo 17 mission to the Moon that takes on a premise of why NASA discontinued the Apollo moon missions. The plot involves a government coverup of the Apollo 18 mission after parasitic lifeforms on the Moon discovered the crew and began to attack them. Much of the back-story remains unknown; however, the movie posters in English indicate the Russian KGB role in Soviet lunar conspiracy and the Russian movie posters show inscriptions in English suggesting an American government cover up in lunar conspiracy. In the trailer, an American astronaut finds a dead cosmonaut and a Soviet LK Lander on the lunar surface. I don't believe there was ever an Apollo 18 mission, although it does appear to be a rather entertaining horror film for those of you that are interested.

Slightly off-topic, but where do you think we would be by now if space programmes had carried on in the Apollo tradition rather than mucking about in low-earth orbit with sky-lab, shuttle etc.?

Possibly on mars or a local asteroid but no doubt at the cost of many more astronauts. Space programs tend to slow down when people start to lose their lives so I guess we could be nowhere near where we are now either. Tough one, worthy of a new thread perhaps ?

I think without doubt there would be a permanent moonbase and even a mining operation, also earth based telescopes would have been abandoned in favour of building them on the dark side of the moon.

No where, there is no way that style of approach is realistically viable for much beyond the moon.

Futher on (sic!) than now? I think we would have had to face more DEATH(S) in space

- Which ultimately may have terminated things too? But, ironically, we did, anyway... :)
