  1. The new scope has arrived, but not the accessories. Will have to wait for dad to get home before I assemble it, though. I must say that, despite measuring it, it's bigger than I thought it would be.

      Congrats!

      Good idea to wait...

wait till you see the Flame in this scope! Try the Monkeyhead too, if you have a UHC/OIII, its not that hard to see under your conditions the other night.

Alas, a filter was beyond the budget I had at the time. But I should be able to get hold of one soon. After making that status the EP, telrad & collimator arrived. That eyepiece is... heavy! Can't wait to put it in the focuser!

I think everything I saw the other night is on the list of things to look at in this new one! And more!

If you han't already try the Eskimo nebula in Gemini, no filter needed, find the little glow with the 24mm and then up the mag, around 150x is a nice place, you can see 2 shells if the sky is transparent.

  2. 3 days and still no word about the delivery date for the new scope... If I don't hear anything after tomorrow I'll have to chase it up. Maybe with bigger orders it takes longer???

I likely will call if I get nothing by the time I get home tomorrow. As it is I'm just assuming it's not dispatched yet or the e-mail is being sent by carrier pigeon.

      *Nothing as in dispatch confirmation

Its all going to work out, I've waited for information on shipped items, only to findb its been shipped etc. I have weeded out a few vendors based on their policy's. The ones I deal with now touch base with me continuously during the purchase phase and only ship by reputable vendors.

Yes call them tomorrow, I'm always polite on the phone...

  3. 250px, Maxvision 82 24mm, telrad & cheshire ordered! Can't wait to get first light with the clouds!

Which targets did you choose? Rewards will be reaped if you collimate carefully, glad to see you ordered the Cheshire and you will really like that Maxvision....

Well, I'm gonna have to try and get first light with M42 M45, M1, M78 and try for NGC 2024. M51 is right there, too. My favourite galaxy that I haven't seen yet :p The OIII filter is going to have to be a 2nd purchase, though. For after I've sold my current kit (hopefully).

    4. jetstream

      jetstream

Nice targets, for first light how dark will your skies be? Don't hesitate to use about 120x on M51... NGC 2024 will be ok if your NELM is 5.8 or above. If the moon is out forget about that one...

      Eagerly waiting first light report!

  4. A perfectly clear and transparent night forecast. Based on observations it looks likely, too. But why couldn't this have happened 3/4 days ago when the moon wasn't as big and set sooner?

      bluemaxroe

      Always the way....

  5. If gimp ever asks if you want to convert the colour format... Do it, it might screw up LAB mode if you don't :/

  6. As it stands, Tuesday looks good! Only problem is that I'd have to brave 40MPH winds :/

      xtreemchaos

that sounds good Pip, im setup tonight with scope out the window , and i keep seeing the odd star, but theres too much fast moving cloud to do anything.

  7. Potential clear skies on new years eve? Hmmm. Last-minute veil/ NA attempts inbound.

any clear skys cool with me Pip, thanks for the headsup, happy new year.charl.

Get up early New Years Day and try for the comet, it will be very close to Arcturus.

  8. Weather forecast has been lying for 3 days straight now! It keeps claiming "Excellent" visibility all night long but observation have never been any better than "Good". Oh well, at least i can get the scope out!

  9. Got my first look at the ring nebula today... I was surprisingly underwhelmed. But then it was in the most light polluted part of the sky and transparency was less than desirable. Mag 4.2 was a struggle. I'll have to try again next year.

    1. Dinsdale Piranha

      Dinsdale Piranha

Deep sky objects are quite often visually under whelming. But remember how far away they are and the fact that only a select few people will EVER see the object with their own eyes and suddenly they are amazing.

    2. pipnina

      pipnina

This is true, I have learned by this point that no object I look at is going to be more than a grey/green smudge/glow. But last night was dissapointing because I was used to seeing more but the weather screwed me over. It made a huge difference.

  10. Clear sky forecast tomorrow with very good visibility. Oooo this is exciting.

I will finally get to use my list of objects I compiled a month ago!

I will definately enjoy it, esp if the updated prediction of "excellent" seeing after 8PM serves true :O Hope you get some clear skies soon, too!

  11. So from my setup, something like a 10/12" dob would be an improvement on setup time/portability? How heavy is your 10"? Easily liftable by 1 person? Hopefully upgrading in the new year.
  12. Is a 10" not easier to move around? My 5" on an EQ2 is a pain (literally, carrying the mount can dig) and is extremely heavy and from deciding to go out to looking through the EP is possibly 2/3 minutes. (i have to detach the scope from the mount, rest the scope on my bed, fold the EQ2, carry the EQ2 out front, unfold it, point it north, bring the scope out and put it on the EQ2, bring the tray with my EPs+ filter+ red torch out. I would much prefer a dob I could pick up by handles.
  13. So contact lenses sidn't work for me. I spent 30 minutes in spec savers trying to get them out, didn't bother with the putting back in. Glasses it is, then :/

I was surprised how easilly they return to being over your pupil when you screw up. I was also surprised as to how akward they were. About a dozen different methods of getting them out and I was terrible at all of them.

    3. pipnina

      pipnina

They also weren't great optically, my glasses do a much better job of dealing with my astigmatism.

    4. hobsey

      hobsey

i would love contacts but i had serious problems get them in and out, so i gave up.

  14. Clear skies tonight. Lunar looking inbound!

  15. M33 was easy... Hopefully NGC 2024 and the sculptor gal will be, too.

Congrats Pip! Just think of tank tracks, big ones, when looking for the Flame...

      alan potts

Pip Although I have two reasonable sized scopes at 12 and 18, I have always found M33 a bit disappointing.

    4. pipnina

      pipnina

alan, I thought it was amazing! But that could be mainly because I wasn't expecting to see it and it jumped out.

  16. Forecast predicted 100% clear skies and "Excellent" seeing. What actually happens? Patchy low cloud, almost complete cover of high cloud and questionable seeing... The moon is almost upon me and I've only had 1 good observing night so far... Will still keep an eye out.

  17. Does this site support animated GIFs as profile pics? I know I saw someone who had one but mine only worked when I uploaded it. Everywhere else it's stuck on frame 1...

maybe something to ask in the Suggestions, Bugs, Errors and Foibles section?

Sunday for me reads like this. fog fog fog fog fog fog mist fog fog fog fog mist, black cloud black cloud! Hmmm remix of 'badger-badger-badger, mushroom! mushroom!' coming?!

    2. pipnina

      pipnina

"Black cloud, Black cloud, Black cloud, Black cloud, Black cloud, fog, fog, mist, fog!"

Mine has improved, thankfully! Not quite "Verry good" but "Good" should be good enough.

  20. OPticians oppointment on saturday to see if I can get contacts.

  21. Compiling a list of objects to search for while the moon's about. I'm never gonna manage half of them XD

  22. Barnards' loop is a visual object!?!? I'm envyous of anyone with skies good enough for that! The images make the HH look bright in comparison!

  23. Moon goes away, clouds come to stay.

      xtreemchaos

and we cant go out to play, untill another day,

    2. Alien 13

      Alien 13

I wish we could have a full Moon every night

  24. Forget my last status! Clear skies all night (OIII filter first light report incoming)

  25. OIII filter about to arrive: Clouds as far as the forecast can see! (sorry if they're affecting you, too)
