Piles of blackflies..... Wikpedia has some stats for Fort Frances....record high 108 deg F, record low -49 deg F. We get Siberian winters with hot humid summers... we love fall :)

Its nice to see experimenting going on.

While we are on the subject, do you think a Barlow in front of the Quark will cause any damage ?

    3. jetstream

      jetstream

Don't do it..... it may but it would need to be up the tube the right amount and some reflective UV/IR's might cause damage. Merlin66, Ward, Luke etc would know I think...

    4. Pig

      Pig

I though it might be a bit risky.... cheers Gerry:-)

  10. The Quirk is giving some very nice views atm :)

  11. 1am and there is a fantastic Northern Lights show across the whole sky. One of the best Auroras yet.

one of my greatest memories of Auroras was when i was 14-15, my mother woke me up to see the entire sky lit up, as we were watching the show it became very intense. the only spot of sky not touched by the aurora was directly above and in the shape of a trumpetting angel. the image has stuck with me for almost 20 years and i suspect it will for a great deal longer

  12. Incredible Ha viewing atm :)

Thanks Rob, the set up is now working well. That huge prom looked very interesting, the shape evolving before the eyes. I love Ha :)

      jabeoo1

I am glad to be sat down whist viewing. Knock me over that active region is screaming, so bright! The suns surface looks like its ripping itself apart. No wonder the northern lights are due.

  13. gone fishin', instead of just a wishin' :)

  14. At one of my dark sky sites the clouds will pick up the town's light dome 15 miles away- I now use this as a guide along with the SQM. The sites I use are the same darkness as laser_jock99's and vary almost exactly the same. The darkness changes with the seasons and on a truly dark, transparent night the Milky Way is a sight to behold. The SQM is a valuable tool for astronomers and can identify dark zone edges in towns or cities in addition to finding remote dark sites.
  15. Fantastic Ha viewing again, trying some different things- once the 90mm is figured out it's on to the 120ED...

    1. Pig

      Pig

How is the Zeiss standing up to scrutiny ?

    2. jetstream

      jetstream

Very, very well Shaun. The sky is allowing big mag. The low power view is jaw dropping though and I must get the reducer figured out with the ZZ- it doesn't need much... I'm maximizing the views with it for sure,.

  16. Having a Ha WOW! moment!

      Luke

It's a real buzz when the contrast kicks in :) Am expecting total cloud cover here for the weekend, no doubt because my Quark now has a Baader clicklock that I want to play with! Good luck everyone.

  17. The Zeiss zoom works very well, Saturn was VG with it and VIP. Solar Ha is also excellent with this EP , so far great results all round :)

    1. Pig

      Pig

Excellent news Gerry :-) Is the field stop of the Zeiss a good match for the Quark ?

    2. jetstream

      jetstream

Yes, the largest for the Zeiss is about 19.5mm, the Quark 22mm or so. This eyepiece works very well for Ha, but more time is needed for in depth comparisons. The eyerelief it tighter than LZ it seems though, we'll see how it does with the reducer- preliminary results with it are good...

    3. Pig

      Pig

Well that is a very promising start :-)

  18. Zeiss zoom arrived! the adpter did not...(different vendor)

      jetstream

lol! I'm just following my EP mentor :)

  19. Can we change the above to SQM-L and drop the "W" ? thanks mods
  20. My SQM-L is faster the brighter the sky. The darkest I've recorded here was 21.8, with 21.7 being a very consistent reading. At this level of darkness it takes many seconds for it's reading. I always give it 3 or so warm up readings first and then start measuring, mine says it is calibrated from the factory and it appears very accurate.
  21. WL solar great again at 10am before it starts to boil, 204x and could use more... :)

  22. Great solar WL views @ 200x mag, SW120ED- the granulation really starts to open up
