Barlow or telecentric amplifier - What's the difference?

It's a question that comes up regularly, but what is the difference between a Barlow and a telecentric amplifier (TA), otherwise known as a Powermate, ES Focal Extender. Meade Telextender, Bresser SA Barlow, etc? A telecentric amplifier does give a 2x magnification, just like a Barlow but that's where the similarity ends. A Barlow is a negative doublet (Smyth lens) that causes the exiting light rays to diverge and hence deliver the image amplification. If you move the EP further from the Barlow

Chasing the Eclipse

As the weather forecast -Lowestoft seafront for the 20th March - was for cloud, cloud and more cloud, my partner and I set off for predicted 'clearing skies' in rural Lincolnshire. This required an early morning call at 4.30am. Strewth this was just like being back at worK! Anyway after quick coffee and cereal, we leapt into rhe 'family wagon' and headed at a brisk pace north west. It was a dark and stormy morning, but as we approached our favoured observation site, a recently manured field t

Dark matter and dark energy source

I would propose the material currently missing from our universe was all there at the Big Bang moment but over the billions of years much has radiated off into the void. Every star, pulsar, quasar and black hole radiate out, from birth, their contents over time. Some of the material would be retained but much would be lost especially at the outer fringe of the universe where there is nothing to stop it from leaving the universe entirely. As an additional thought, is it possible that the expansion

The Mechanical Event

According to Galileo, Newton, and Einstein, the classical principle of relativity states that no mechanical experiment can be done to detect absolute motion, or motion of a material object relative to an everywhere stationary medium (similar to Michelson-Morley). A common reformulation of this principle states that: ♦The velocity of any motion has different values for two observers moving relative to each other. The following thought experiment proposes to investigate this principle, that is, to

Man Flu

Have been coughing and sneezing my way through February. When you add "am I feeling up to setting up my scope" to "are there clouds" to "is there too much moonlight" ?? Its all too easy to leave the scope in its box and rack up in front of the fire. Anyway, the 21st February presented a fine clear night and I enjoyed imaging the ‘king of planets’.

ImPPG (Image Post-Processor)

ImPPG has moved to GitHub: http://greatattractor.github.io/imppg/     ImPPG performs Lucy-Richardson deconvolution, unsharp masking, brightness normalization and tone curve adjustment. It can also apply previously specified processing settings to multiple images. All operations are performed using 32-bit floating-point arithmetic.   Supported input formats: FITS, BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF (most of bit depths and compression methods), TGA and more. Images are processed in grayscale and can be

It's been quite a few months now since I've been out for any serious sessions with the Telescope. However the bad habit of smoking does get me outside on a regular basis where naked eye observing was regularly taking place during those months. My latest purchase is a GoPro Hero 4 Silver. Working in IT and having a love of gadgets the camera has opened up a lot of opportunities which also include using it for a bit of Astro Photography. I only purchased the camera a few days ago and the forecast

Loyal customers: Strongest marketing tools

When you sit down and think about how you can do the best marketing to your customers, you probably start thinking of all the normal outlets, such as print ads and online ads. However, you may not realize that one of the strongest marketing tools you have is your loyal customers. There is nothing like repeat business and recommendations to help bring in more business. But how can you make sure your customers stay loyal so you can guarantee their return business and recommendations to friends? He

Time for a new lap

I finally managed to test my mirror after going back to 600 to get rid of a centre problem and as soon as I got the mirror on the test rig in the dark I could see immediately that the centre wasn't polishing properly so I've decided that I'm going to start afresh with a new lap.I can't be certain yet that I've cured the centre problems but I'm hopeful and as Mapster had also had this problem after going back to 600 and then great success with the new lap I'm certain that it's the way to go.So ho

Established wisdom, or opinion parroted as fact?

I threw an opinion into the mix in the beginners forum the other night and decided I should expand on my reasoning here. Even somewhere as benign as SGL, you still have to remember this IS the internet. That means opinions repeated enough by people with large post counts, gain credence as fact among the rest of the forum. It does not hurt to challenge that, if only to get people thinking, as long as you do it in a reasoned way. So..... What got me thinking was the humble 8" Dob. For instance, I'

Ye Gods, I've just counted it all up....

I've only been doing this hobby seriously for about four and a half years. For some reason, I decided to list everything I've owned in terms of the major items - If you included freebie EPs, cables, adapters, etc, I'm sure the result would be even more scary. Well I know it was Jupiter anyway!

Ok, so the photo isn't a classic but to me it's a masterpiece :-) ...the first time I have ever seen Jupiter through a telescope let alone been able to photograph it. Pretty awesome to be honest considering I've managed to take a photo of a planet over 550million km away and whilst I don't think it'll win any prizes it has made me a happy man!

Post Installation and Daily Care Tips For Cement Tiles

Majority of people choose cement tile for their interiors because of its ever new look that remains as it is for years. Another treasure worthy feature of cement tile is that it requires hardly any maintenance! However, it is also a proven fact that little bit of care and maintenance retains the novel appeal of these tiles for much longer span as compared to other types of floor tiles. Now you might feel curious to know about these maintenance measures. For your convenience, we have provided h

One Velocity, Two Reference Frames

According to Newton and Einstein, the principle of relativity states that no mechanical experiment can be done to detect absolute motion, or motion of a material object relative to a stationary medium (similar to Michelson-Morley). Common reformulations of this principle state that: 1) The velocity of a material object takes on the simplest formula, as seen by an observer at rest in a reference frame, no matter whether the reference frame is at rest, or moving with constant velocity, v. 2) The

29/01/2015 - 30/01/2015 New toy day - laser alignment tool.

29/01/2015 - 30/01/2015 New toy day - laser alignment tool. I thought the 130SLT was working pretty well until I checked the collimation: way out. There should be a warning that your new scope will be off focus until a laser alignment tool is used and the collimation corrected. So that done I got the scope outside only to have the batteries die. Then I found that my 12V PSU is the wrong polarity. So I got the NiMH fast-charged, and of course the skies clouded over 8/8 with some heavy stuff from

Stalled a bit

Following on from my last entry I've done 4 hours of 600 alu oxide with the tile tool and 1 1/2 hours of polishing.Im going to do another 30 min polishing then test to see if I have got rid of my centre problem then go from there. Not done much over the last few weeks as a result of first being ill and working a lot and secondly the return of some old tendinitis in my right hand which has put a climbing holiday in march in doubt.Bit too cold for the pitch lap at the moment too so may leave polish
