Flaming Star, Flipping Heck!

Hi

Had my first go at IC 410 and the Flaming Star Nebula with my stock Canon 550D and quite frankly I'm blown away.

I'd managed to get reasonable polar alignment on the Astrotrac after a few test shots so started imaging with 3 minutes exposures,

I used a 200mm lens at F3.2 and got 32 frames at 1600iso. Earlier in the evening I'd tried shooting the California Nebula

with very disappointing results so I wasn't expecting much but WOW

The latter canons are pretty good un-modded as this pic shows... its definitely worth spending more time on the target as theres more to come yet ...

Yes Peter, the 200 F2.8 was built for astrophotography, I used a CLS clip filter to cut out the towns light pollution.

The 200 f2.8L does look "interesting"...

I did the same target a while back with a modded 1000D... 5 hours at f4.8 ISO 800 (Megrez 72 and FF III)

This is a lovely image - the Canon 200L series really is a great lens but you've absolutely made the best of it!

Cracking image - The tracking certainly looks spot on- polar alignment is half the battle- 3 minute exposures and no drift.

Wow, what a wide field....

How do you incorporate the LP filter (just out of interest), into the train? Screwed onto the front, a rear gel or inside the camera...

The clip filter fits inside the camera body so any lens (not EFs lenses though) attached to the camera is filtered.

A really great result Mel and I think even more could be extracted from it as the black point may be a little clipped. The 550D is suprisingly sensitive to Ha despite being unmodded.

Awesome pic, that gives me some hope and inspiration (another Unmodded Canon owner here). I sometimes wonder if lots of 3 min subs are more useful than fewer 5 min subs.
