Hello and a warm welcome. Two of my sisters live over in the US, so I get the odd cheap holiday :()

I'd give a big thumbs up to Stellarium. You can even download extra bolt-on tools to show space hardware or the field of view through your own set-up.

I use it to control my HEQ5 mount- which is a joy :))

Welcome to the forum, Ricky

Anyone know of any free online resources for sky maps and such ?

If you prefer an online resource that can be printed, check out the Tri-atlas at JR's website on Deep Sky Astronomy You can select the scale and faintness to suit your situation/equipment and then print out the pages you require as you need them. Gradually build up an entire sky atlas that way.
