Hi to everyone. I've just registered on this site but have been reading some of your posts for a short while. There are clearly a lot of very knowledgeable people here - so I'm looking forward to learning a lot more about astronomy from you guys.

Although I regard myself as a relative beginner in visual astronomy, I've actually had a scope for some years (8.5 in reflector). However, I've never really used it as much as I should have for a variety of reasons. Over recent months I've been investigating ways of trying to get the best out of it, which hopefully should result in a lot more use.

One of the problems is that I live on the borders of Greater London and Surrey, so local sky conditions are far from ideal. Nevertheless, I'm sure that some of you have equally poor conditions but still get a lot from the hobby. I suspect it is just a case of being more realistic about what I can view successfully.

Thanks,

John
