Sir Patrick Moore - Projected!

Last night, to celebrate the Apollo Moon Landings, Adur and Worthing Astronomical Societies presented some of Sir Patrick Moore's slides at Herstmonceux Observatory.

Whilst we were there, we also started playing around with the projector, and discovered that we could project an image onto Dome D. Here is a shot of Sir Patrick Moore larger than life projected on Dome D from Dome B.

This was a collaborative effort by Richie Jarvis, Trevor Little, Steve Collingwood and Leanne Irving - thanks to the Herstmonceux Science Centre for letting us play :)

The image was projected using a Canon Projector, and taken using a Canon EOS 350D with the stock 18-55mm lens at F/8 and ISO1600. Exposure was 1 second.

There is just something about the atmosphere at Hersty in the evenings surrounded by those old domes and telescopes, when the Yapp was built in the mid 1930s it cost something like £15000 in those day’s a 2/3 bed roomed house cost about £1000 so if you have never been it’s well worth a visit, to visually see M 27 fill the field of view in the Thompson Refractor is something one never forgets.

Saturday afternoon was quite busy with lot’s of children using the exhibits and we showed quite a few some shuttle launches and an old Apollo 11 launch video, the evening session kicked off with a talk from a rocket scientist explaining the early Mercury missions up to the Apollo missions.

We had a good selection of Sir Patrick’s personal photographs on display along with some 120 digitised slides from his collection that we are archiving run through the computer and projector and I gave a short talk about the recent LRO images of the landing sites that were released Friday, we also had the full size Lunar Image on display which made quite a talking point.

The Lunar Image will be on display during the Astro Festival and some talks will be arranged regarding the capture and processing of it.

We have a few ideas for the Astro Festival in September especially the evening now we know how far we can project an Image.

Without the help of people like Richie, Steve C, Mark and Lea and a few others giving their time to help educate the general public non of what we do would be possible :)
