Jupiter showing GRS and Mars animations 25/12/2022

Hi all,

With my gear, both software and hardware, optimized for planetary capturing, I though it was worth it to give it a go on the night of 25th (of December, 2022), despite the forecast predicting a huge storm coming my way. As you can see below, the seeing was so bad (2", maybe) that, for the Mars animation, I had to remove the outer ring that came out in the staked images, which was painfully noticeable after tweaking with the wavelets and levels:

Also, I think I could have improved my focus. In fact, the forecast was so bad that I didn't bother to double check my focus with my bahtinov mask and just assumed that its  position from the previous night would do the work. Jupiter's image size was reduced, Mars one was not.

The gear:

  • Celestron C8 XLT
  • Sky-Watcher HEQ5
  • Baader Q-Barlow 2.25x
  • ZWO ASI224MC

The software:

  • CDC
  • EQMOD
  • Firecapture
  • Autostakkert
  • Registax
  • The gimp

Thanks for looking,

NV
