SGL 2022 Challenge 2 - Dust!

Recommended Posts

Here is a rather dusty view of The Cave Nebula (Sh2-155) and its slightly less spectacular neighbour in the Sharpess catalogue - Sh2-154. Clearly the whole area is full of Ha emitting dust as well as dark nebulosity (so several of the entres in Lynds' dark nebula catalogue) and then that nice blue reflection nebula VdB155.

Imaged during quite a bit of moonlight on 12 March 2022 with the dual-RASA8 rig with ASI2600MC and IDAS NBZ dual-band filter (Ha+Oiii). 76 x 5 min = 6 h 20 min (gain 100, offset 30, -15°C). Processed in PI and PS.

I also attach an annotated version.

Cheers, Göran

Dusty Bear.

Using my latest acquisition a pre-used astro-modded Canon 200d camera, an Altair Triband clip in Filter and my Sigma widefield zoom lens at f=15 F 5.6 and ISO 800 24x5minute lights.  Taken before the  LED street lighting went out. Processed and cropped using Affinity photo software.

By accident, me and my dual RASA8 rig stumbled again on a supernova remnant (top left quadrant of the image), which after some search (with great  help from Wim van Berlo) turned out to have been suggested by radio astronomers in 2014 and denoted G150.3+4.5 (https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/abs/2014/07/aa24128-14/aa24128-14.html). As far as I can tell there are no visual-light images of it, and this is likely to be the first. There are clear Oiii and Ha emitting filaments coinsiding with the most active area shown by the radio telescopes, and some weak and more diffuse Oiii signal, but most of the SNR may be too faint to be seen visually (at least with my equipment) and there is a lot of dark dust in the area that may be obscuring it, so there are some of the dust that brings me to submit it to the challenge.

The image is a three panel mosaic with a lot of overlap, with about 18 hours at f/2 on the SNR. There are also three Sharpless objects in the image and a lot of dark nebulosity from the Lynds' and Barnard's catalogues.

I am surprided that the huge Ha emitting circular nebulosity covering most of the image has not been annotaded or named. However, it is quite faint and I am struggling to find a suitable name suggestion.

Captured 29 March to 1 April 2022 with my dual-RASA8 rig and ASI2600MC cameras with IDAS NBZ dual band Ha+Oiii filters on a Mesu 200. 337 x 5 min, so 28 hours. SQM between 21.2 and 21.4, no moon

Cheers, Göran

The Brontosaurus Nebula (Sh2-204), and LDN 1388 - 1389 in Camelopardalis

These bright and dark nebulae are very rarely imaged as judging from what I can find on Astrobin. In fact, I cannot find any images of LDN1388 and 1389 (the dark nebulae in the middle of the image). I was surprised how nice looking Sh2-204 is, and stimulating to the imagination. I think I can see a hand. Then several have seen a Brontosaurus, and I now also see that. So The Brontosaurus Nebula is shall be!

This could be my last image for the season (but I hope not). Moon is getting up and astrodarkness is gone within a months up here at 60°N

Imaged 2 April 2022 with my dual-RASA8 rig. So, RASA 8 with ASI2600MC and IDAS NBZ dual-band filter (Ha+Oiii) on a Mesu200. 88x5 min = a bit more than 7 hours. Processed in PI and PS, including Star Xterminator.

Processed in a rather dark room so best viewed in a rather dark room.

Cheers

Göran

Great images posted here!

I will add a few, however, B7 skies are rough on dust!

NOTE: I used a UV/IR cut filter for the M45 image and a L-eNhance for the Cone Nebula and Flame/HorseheadImage. Thanks!

Jim

In these last desperate days before astrodarkness disappears, I am aiming at more dust, actually plenty of dust from Lynds', Sharpless' and Barnard's catalogues caught in one image.

Nevertheless, Sh2-134 and 135 are rather rarely imaged Ha regions close to the extensively imaged Elephant Trunk Nebula. A very busy area, especially when going deep with the RASA8, with an almost overwhelming amount of nebulosity of all sorts, like an astronomical wilde fire.

This is 8.8 hours of HaOiii data (NBZ filter) collected yesterday (11 April) combined with about 4 hours of RGB data collected back in  january 2021. The NB data makes up ca 70 % of the signal and brought out much more of the faint stuff.

So, a HaOiiiRGB image from my dual-RASA8 and ASI2600MC on a Mesu200. 106 x 5 min with the IDAS NBZ filter (Ha+Oiii) and 47 x 5 min RGB (without filter). Processed in PI and PS including stretching of a starless version (Star Xterminator) before adding back the stars (mainly RGB stars).

Cheers & CS, Göran

IC 1396 imaged over a few nights recently.

Full of the dark dusty regions and captured in RGB to show the various color tones from neighboring bright stars on the nebulae. The garnet star shines on the region at the bottom, just out of frame.

Supernova remnant G150.3+4.5 and LDN 1400 & Co in HaOiiiRGB

In late March I stumbled on these faint blue (Oiii) and red (Ha) filaments by accident when I imaged this area using the NBZ dual band Ha+Oiii filter. After some searching, and with the help from friends, I realized that this was the first visual light image of the SNR G150.3+4.5 described by radio astronomers in 2014. (https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/abs/2014/07/aa24128-14/aa24128-14.html). I have now combined about 18 hours of HaOiii data with 4 hours of RGB data (ASI2600MC without filter).

I get the feeling that the dark nebulosity and other dust are obscuring most of the SNR and that we just get a small glimpse of it through a hole in the dust clouds.

So, caught with my dual RASA8 rig and ASI2600MC. 212x5 min with IDAS NBZ filter and 49 x 5 min without filter, so totally about 22 hours.

Cheers, Göran

Truly splendid image. Very impressed!  In my opinion, the best of some very good images.

Dusty regions really have some interesting nicknames.

Here's my latest and my first go at a definitive dusty region.

NCG 7023 and surrounding Iris Nebula.

With a bit of spare time each day, while Mrs. H sleeps after her recent surgery, I have processed a stack of 5minute lights at ISO800 using DeepSkyStacker, Affinity Photo,  APS,  Topaz Denoise AI and Fitswork4.  Canon 200d DSLR with Altair Triband filter, Sigma zoom lens at f=15mm, all on a Star Adventurer equatorial mount .

The image was marginally cropped at the edges.  The very bright meteor appeared on one of the light frames.

I was surprised how much hydrogen alpha and oxygen lll my modded DSLR captured in this area of the  night sky. I decided to go  full technicolor on this one.1768661445_UrsaMajorandComa.thumb.png.5b03db14fcddd06daa378822ebc4eda1.png

Sh2-140, Sh2-145, Sh2-150 and PK107+7.1 in Cepheus

I continue my hunt for galactic dust until the bitter end, which will be soon since astrodarkness is rapidly disappearing up here now.

This two-panel mosiac was imaged under a full moon with my dual-RASA rig over two nights. Again the IDAS NBZ dual band (Ha+Oiii) filter made it possible even with the moon at full force.

Sh2-140 is rather commonly imaged, but this is not so much so for the other two Sharpless objects in the image. The Ha emitting sphere in the top right corner is the faint but rather large (15') planetary nebula PK 107+7.1

So, caught 16-17 April 2022 with RASA8 and ASI2600MC (gain 100) with IDAS NBZ filter, on a Mesu 200. 193 x 5 min, so about 17 hours. Processed in PI and PS, including Star Xterminator to stretch the nebulosity separately from the stars.

Cheers, Göran

Not managed much dust this winter but recently managed M81/M82 with surrounding IFN - 15hrs 56mins with a Sigma 105mm lens.  Two data sets - 6 hours from Roboscopes early April and the rest was data previously collected from my own Bortle 5 skies April 21.

Sh2-160 in Cepheus

This very rarely imaged object from the Sharpless catalogue is located about 2.5 degrees north of the Lobster Claw and Cave Nebulae. I can only find one other image of it on Astrobin. Quite strong in Ha but no Oiii to be found by the NBZ dual-band filter. Imaged over two nights (23-24 April) since nights are getting very short up here, so this willl be my second but last image for the season (I can say that since I have collected the data for a final one).

So, dual RASA8 and ASI2600MC (gain 100) with IDAS NBZ dual-band filters (Ha+Oiii) on a Mesu 200 mount. 90 x 5 min, so 7.5 hours. Procesed in PI and PS .

Cheers
