AstroLandscapes #22 - experimenting with the Starglow filter

Recommended Posts

Kase Filters sell the Alyn Wallace Starglow filter, which creates a  blurring effect (like high cloud can) around brighter stars.  It's not to everyone's taste, but I love the dreamy appearance it can give and how it showcases the colours of stars.  I've been experimenting with mine recently.  Here's some shots I took using it at Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire last week.  I'm interested in your thoughts on the effect! 📷

I quite like the effect. Makes the stars and colours pop. I wasn't sure when I saw Alyn's first video with it but definitely adds something.

Nice photos, looks great with the Windmill. Second photo is really nice.

Great pics and I like the effect as a way of picking out constellations.  I've used Noel Carboni's star spikes pro tool in PS to do something very similar, the advantage of this tool is that it gives you complete control over the amount of flare and which stars are affected.

I've not tried that, Martin - interesting.  There's also a "starglow" tool within the Astro Workflor Lightoom Presets from Alyn Wallae, with which you have full control, but I prefer the more natural look of the filter.  The filter can be used for only parts of the exposure, which gives an element of control over the intensity of the effect, but it's obvioulsy not as precise as doing it in post.  At some point I'll post a more detailed review showing the effect for different targets and different exposures etc.

I like the effect on the stars in a " Quiet " shot but it's not to my taste on the Milky Way.

Orion is going to be spectacular with that pump in the view. If it lines up ok that is,

Dave.

I do like the effect. A while ago I was researching a filter that could do this. I came across the tiffen fog 3 filter which claims to emphasize the brighter stars and creating a fog like effect everywhere else. From the images I have seen using the filter it looks promising but I have not tried it yet. Seeing your image has made me think I really do need to try the tiffen filter.
