which dslr for red H alpha?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Canon specialist required!

I'm a long time Nikon user. I realise that affordable and available come in Canon flavour only. I'd like to go with these guys:

http://cheapastrophotography.vpweb.co.uk/Available-Cameras.html

My requirements are seemingly simple. I want to photograph stuff like the horsehead and the red nebulae and I would like live preview I can connect to a laptop. Which is the cheapest among those in the link that will fulfil these requirements?

TIA

BYE = BackYardEOS software

I've been looking at getting a Canon, but I have seen some of the results from the Nikon D750 and it looks fantastic, but it is £1000!

I've been thinking about this for ages too and did bid on a couple of Canon 60D, they seem to go for about £300

But, if I'm thinking of spending £1000 on a camera, maybe I should just get a dedicated CCD / CMOS

You can focus with BYE. I always use a Bahtinov mask for focusing but using BYE makes that much easier too. You can trial BYE for a month before you have to purchase but I think that you will want to buy it afterwards. It's very inexpensive.

The swivel screen is a very good extra to have on a Reflector when the DSLR is up high or a Refractor when the DSLR is near ground level, my 1100D didn't have one the 600D i use does and its been a blessing.....

Juan at CheapAstro does a good reliable job...

You cannot focus in BYE but it can aid you in focusing. You still have to move the knobs. I don't think you can control a motor focuser with it.

A swivel screen isn't a must but it makes things alot easier especially when doing a 2/ 3 star alignment

Geordie is quite right of course - what I meant is that you focus the telescope but use BYE to check it. Also If you have the premium version of BYE, you can use BYE's ASCOM focuser interface to move the focuser.

Yes you will. There will be a very slight delay since your camera has to "talk" to your laptop/ PC, but it will be almost instant.

It'd definitely be an idea to get yourself a bahtinov mask as you can be alot more accurate with them

Yep. Almost decided. One more thing that a quick google didn't answer clearly: H-alpha passes through glass, yes? I have a refractor.

Cheers

Yes it does. The glass/ mirrors on telescopes will allow all light spectrums to pass through.

I would also suggest you look into buying a light pollution filter for longer exposures.

I used to use an astronomik cls ccd clip in filter with my Astro modded 600D. I actually got the camera from Juan at cheapastrophotography.
