Ive spent many nights In the Scottish bothies and try to have a few trips each year during the winter for walking and climbing in

remote parts. They are basic but usually dry and you take your own comforts.

Ive seen some of the darkest skies from the bothies in the North West , 20 years ago while in Souries bothy I saw the

tail of Comet Hyakutake stretch halfway across the sky.

Never thought of that before, but sounds a great way to do some observing/imaging in areas of very Dark Skies.

Need to carry power supplies with you of course, a Sleeping Bag, and even a Small Calor Gas fire would

make it more comfortable, used with great care of course.

A Bothy saves erecting a huge Tent, so not having to take a tent with you, leaves room for other essentials

for comfort. No need to be too Spartan you know  .

Couple of good ones up here, if you think some of the commercial locations in the Galloway Dark Sky park are good , hike up to Calsharg bothy in the Galloway hills at Glentrool. Now thats ink black , a we bit remote though so only take portable kit . Definitely not for the nervious up there on your own at night !
