Dom1961
Okay, so my mum has agreed to let me get a 100D and Kit lens from argos under the pay 6 months later thingymajjiggy. So I was looking at a tripod from argos that I could also get. I saw this one, it has good reviews but doesn't have a ball head, is a ball head a must?http://www.argos.co.uk/m/static/Product/partNumber/3456338.htm#customer_reviewsCan you see any other good ones? I'd like to stay cheap, as I don't want to build up the 6 months later cost that I'll have to pay later. Thanks!
PeterCPC
I got that tripod and it seems ok but not the best - you need a ball head if you are going to put your camera on top of your scope for widefield imaging. If you get a ball head be sure to get one with a quick release system.Peter
Dom1961
OK? As in its wobbly? I'll only be using it for night scales and day to day use, maybe mounting a star adventurer in the future, will it be alright for this?
cjdawson
I've got a tripod like that. I'll do for starters. Best thing that I can suggest is that you also get a cable release for the camera. Can pick up an interval timer.Something like this...http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fotga-Remote-Shutter-Release-Pentax/dp/B00A65ST1Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1441794196&sr=8-2&keywords=interval+timer+canon+100dWhat that you can use it as a cable release, also you can programme it to take multiple exposures. Combine that with the mirror lock feature in the camera, and you should be good to go.I'm sure that after some time, you'll want to upgrade to a better tripod, but it's not bad. glowingturnip
don't think you'll need to have a ballhead to start out, that has a pan and tilt head so should be good enough. +1 for a cable release/intervalometerHave fun !

It's also ok, for a DLSR, but with that weight it is at its limit - it's ok, but there are much better. I'd not even try putting a small telescope on, it'll be too much weight for that tripod. Dom1961
I've just worked out a 100d and 18-55mm weigh 612g, I've read that the 100d is the lightest dslr, will this make a difference?

happy-kat
Ball Heads are very useful, if a tripod has standard fitment then you can fit your own ball head on top I think. There are 302 reviews on Amazon for the first tripod from Argos that you listed. cjdawson
The weight if your camera won't be a problem with the Velbon tripod - I've used my sucessfully with both my 30D and my 70D. The 30D weights in 785g. My 70D weighs 755g.Both of those weights are for the body only, so the lens is more. You'll be fine. Having said that a manfrotto tripod I think would be better - then you will need a ball head if you want to angle the camera (get a good one later)
dph1nm
Check if the height of the tripod suits you - otherwise for astro shots you will spend your life kneeling on the floor or bent double trying to align on the sky! NigelM
happy-kat
The mamfrotto listed has too low a payload capability I think much less than the Argos one.Payload capability, 4 kilos versus 1.5 is a significant difference.
happy-kat
Perhaps not beefy enough for the star adventurer though as well fully loaded. Not extending the legs does give most stability I have found on tripods, less wobble.Reading Amazon reviews it extends pretty high so not short changed there. Stub Mandrel
Ballhead will drive you bonkers unless you fork out for a good one. Cheapest solution is a decent ball head on a budget tripod.I bought a cheap pan & tilt Hama one from CPC for about £12, just to replace my old cheap and cheerful. It turns out to be quite good, gives me an eye level viewfinder (I'm 6' 2") two spirit levels, two way wedge, carry handle and case. I took about 200 30-second non-tracking wide angle shots on 'Perseid night' and I didn't get any shake.
