I have downloaded my raws  into dss and it outputs as a tiff how do I open this  without  buying photoshop which I can't afford?

If you want all the utter confusion and frustration of Photoshop, but for free you can download a 30 day trial of

Zoner Photo Studio which will (I am told) "do" 16 bit TIFs

If you keep your eyes peeled on the "giveaway" software sites, such as http://sharewareonsale.com or http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

you will see that from time to time - roughly every 6 months or so, this massive, complicated but very powerful package comes up for grabs for free and completely legit!.

Alternatively if you have a time machine handy, pop back about a week or so and get a free copy from the last time it was offered.

does cs2  open 16 bit tiff?

Yes it does. I've played with the StarTools demo as well, some of the tools seem to work well (gradient removal, star reduction, distortion compensation for correcting coma) but I've had weird results using the auto and manual exposure components, possibly I'm doing something wrong. I find it easier to use DSS and PS to adjust the colour curves before loading into StarTools. I think I probably will buy it, but I'll experiment a bit more first.

GIMP 16 bit has been promised for so many years now it is too daft,

it will be eligible for its state pension when it is born !

The roadmap promised "Up to 64bit per color channel, will be available in 2.10"

The FAQ says "This work will be completed in GIMP 3.0, which will have full support for high bit depths. If you need such support now and can't wait, cinepaint and Krita support 16 bits per channel now."

I gave up waiting long long ago,

and now use Artweaver (the free version) when I want something easier than ImageJ :)

If Boris can do 16bit as a one-man-band, one wonders what is going on in the GIMP camp :(

I belive 16bit is in the 2.9 branch of gimp, so if you dont mind nightly builds you might want to try the following: http://nightly.darkrefraction.com/gimp/

Yes, 16 bit is in the dev branch which is 2.9, but that means well, early alpha / dev software

When the 2.9 is ready, it will be labeled 2.10 i think....

ImageJ is really special, but the other stuff might be worth a shot!

At a guess, it's probably much easier to do from scratch than to retrofit. It's probably a case of finding all the bugs and making sure it runs reasonably quickly.

I was being a wee bit rhetorical !

But yes you are probably right

and add, not helped by a dose of infighting, a load of apathy and until recently a complete contempt of/for things windows.

(who remembers the GimpWindows Users group :) ? )

EDIT

I forgot to add - and Boris(Artweaver) has the good grace to answer questions and generally help :)

Not to mention a more gentle learning curve for newcomers !
