Canon eos 1100d

Thinking of buying one of these cameras for the northern lights in march. Anyone use one for astrophotography?

Yes - quite a few folk use this camera and get excellent results with it.

£299 seems a bit expensive

3249 seems a bit more reasonable. then again it all depends if you want a lens with it or just a body

It's also worth considering last years models. EOS1000d body only should be under £150, EOS 350d under £100. Yes the EOS 1100d is better, I have one (well the wife does but that's much the same thing) but unless those last few pixels will make all the difference last years model may be sufficient.

Or get a decent Canon body like the 30D 40D etc. Bomb proof. 40D gives you live view etc and they are build to last.  Just picked up a 40D with 3k shutter count for £175.

Just worth adding that you can pick up an 1100D body only factory refurbed for around £ 165 on Ebay - mine came with just 200 clicks on the shutter!   If you were looking to astro mod the camera anyway, then the warranty would be voided.   This would leave a few pounds spare for the T mount adapter, LP filter, spare batteries and mains adaptor.     As another tip, I would definitely recommend a look at APT for camera control if you are using a laptop/computer.
