One easy tip, try out your scope in daylight then its second nature when its dark. Plus you can easily shake down any focussing issues.

Welcome. Why not post more details about the scope you got for xmas? Im new to the hobby as well but can agree with the person who recomend Stellarium. I just recently tried it out myself and was very impressed. Nice free software.

As to furthering your knowledge of the subject, a copy of Turn Left at Orion comes highly recommended for users of all small scopes, available through the large on-line seller or from any good book shop
