Hey guys,

Been out observing with my dad and he noticed a moon imerging jupiters edge in the 11 o clock position at around 11:54.

Looking this up on stellarium we are inclined to think it was Io but has anyone known stellariums moons to be slightly 'off' sometimes?

Left my sky at night mag at work :)

Could someone clarify?

Cheers

i also saw this, did you look for io's shadow on the surface of jupiter, it was in the same region as the GRS...was amazing, looked like someone had punched a circle through to the other side, it was inky-black the shadow...very impressive!

Just been out for an observing session with Jupiter tonight. Just to clarify...I saw Io come out from ?behind Jupiter, and then, a little later, when Io had moved away a little from the planet, I saw a distinct, small black dot, in alignment with IO on the surface of jupiter. Daft question, but was I seeing the shadow of Io, or am I getting a little carried away?? If it 'was', I'll be dead pleased!!

Cheers,

Vicky.

Yes you were looking at Io"s shadow ok,i was out my self the shadow end time was 00.36,congrats on your first shadow transit.

Paul

Thanks for the clarification Paul!! Brilliant stuff!! I really didn't think it would show up so clearly!! Amazing.

Also, at the same time, I saw a distinct 'elongated/circular' feature on one of the equatorial belts. Checking on stellarium, the GRS (haven't seen this yet!) shouldn't have been visible at that time, so was I viewing a 'small storm'. ??

I must say, I got some great views last night!!

Cheers,

Vicky.

You did see Io come from behind Jupiter, however that means it was not possible for there to be a shadow transit.

Dates and times of these events can be seen here->http://media.skyandtelescope.com/documents/JphenTab2011-2012.pdf

There was a shadow transit on Tuesday night but not last night. What you did see was a dark patch on the belt which is visible in my not very good image from last night. It would be moving in the opposite direction to Io. You can just see Io in my image.

Most planaterium software will show when a moon emerges from behind Jupiter, but the moon doesn't actually become visible until it emerges from Jupiter's shadow. I am not sure about Stellarium but Starry Night PRO has 3D physics that reliably shows when the moon emerges from the shadow into the sunlight.

Hope that helps,

Steve
