  1. Great result, John. Really is lovely out there tonight. Do you think the HH was easier second time around?
  2. It's certainly not Texas weather but it's not that bad. I've only had a telescope for a year but feel like I've got a good amount of use out of it. Would I like to have used it more? Of course I would but it's a case of making the best of what you have. I've had a couple of sessions already this week
  3. My first instinct on reading this post was that my eyepiece collection was quite uniform with 3 BST’s. On closer inspection, there’s 4 diff manufacturers in there: Celestron, Explore Scientific, BST and Baader!
  4. Congratulations! Must feel great to still be having firsts after so many years I’m the hobby
  5. I don't know what to say, I never expected to win! I'd like to thank my wife for her instance that I "go outside and leave her alone". Without her encouragement I may never have taken the winning picture. I'd also like to thank the judge for his kind words and for picking my picture ahead of all the other entries on the day
  6. Tonight I present to you the Great (mediocre) Orion Nebula. Using a full 1 second exposure on an iPhone 8 and the Nightcap app, I was able to capture one of the most photographed wonders of the night sky. I also used sliders in the Pixelmator app to try and hide all the funny red bits in the image. I hope you and the judge enjoy the image!
  7. Amazing what can be seen. Forgive my ignorance, will the magnitude remain at that level or is there potential for it to get brighter?
  8. That's awesome, Tim! Great skills to make something like to such a high standard.
  9. Fab report. Really enjoyed it. Nice to read about the build up to your various successes. Excellent picture too. I'm planning on some binoculars for Christmas. I think they'll be a big big help with getting a first look at targets and planning star hopping routes as you've done
  10. My only observing tonight was showing my son and his best friend Saturn and Albireo. "Cool" was the response which I believe is the very highest of praise for 8 years olds ;)

  11. Good review, Stephan. Thank you for posting I'm just using setting on my iPhone to turn everything red and dim the screen to only 5% brightness. I'm curious to try the sheet now to see if it performs any better than my current solution!
  12. Astronomy is like sex in that you spend much more time thinking about it than actually doing it

I was hard at it from eleven 'o'clock til three the other night.  On the other hand, my love life iis more sporadic...

:laughing4: Good point. At least Astronomy sessions are measured in HOURS in most cases!

  13. I never paid much attention to the weather forecast until I got my telescope. It's very sad at the moment with little hope on the horizon for a good clear night. I do, however, agree with @Pig. If it was clear all the time then it would be easy to take it for granted. It's the evenings spent reading forum posts, books and planning the next session that all add to the excitement when the clouds finally do clear. The only problem I have is that I then try to fit 3 weeks worth of viewing into 1 night! Especially difficult with the short summer nights!
  14. This was from the very first time I saw Jupiter through a telescope. I still remember how exciting it was. I was thrilled that I could see the moons too! Using the SkyWatcher "super" 10mm eyepiece and 2x Barlow that came with my scope. I've also included a pic of my ultra high tech setup, you can actually see Jupiter in that pic too. iPhone 6 using standard camera app and absolutely no processing. I did have an adapter to hold the phone. I'm now all inspired to go and take some more pics to try and earn myself the hallowed prize of a StuPOD!
  15. After several sessions hunting down objects, it was really nice to have a relaxed hour or so just looking at Saturn and Jupiter. In bed before midnight too!

  16. It's more of an astrogear case than an eyepiece case. It's not the most impressive eyepiece collection either. However, I'm really excited to have my own case! I've already seen so much more than I thought possible and have a lot more to see. Can't wait ?
  17. Now you know why my handle is littleguy
  18. One of the most frequently recommended items on SGL... Clear skies, m'hearties!
  19. Split the double double, M44, M3, M97, M51, Saturn and now... bed!

      Awesome!

  20. I've reached that nice tipping point, where my research is focused almost exclusively on filling my observing list rather than my eyepiece case

  21. Cloudy skies but a successful evening spent removing my red dot finder to better position my new Telrad finder. Rebalanced and collimated scope. Also filtered my red torch to make it a bit dimmer. The postman brought me an 82a (light blue) filter too. All set for the next night with a break in clouds :)

  22. Tonight was one of those nights. M101 was there, I was looking at it but I wasn't see it!

  23. It's a great feeling when the weather forecast is wrong and the skies are clear. Nebula in Auriga and great views of Jupiter. Definitely need to add a UHC filter and some medium/low eyepieces to my collection though

I was using a SkyWatcher Explorer 130. I was mainly looking at NGC 1893 which I've since discovered is actually an open cluster. I did also look at IC405 but it was difficult to see much with the eyepieces I have. I only have the stock 25mm eyepiece for a finder and then it's a jump to an 8mm BST or barlow the 25mm. I'm planning on the 12mm and the 18mm which should be much better suited to nebula, especially with a UHC filter

I gotta give it a try during the weekend with UHC filter and a trip to darker skies. Thanks for inspiration!

If you've got a UHC filter then give this a look:

       http://www.prairieastronomyclub.org/filter-performance-comparisons-for-some-common-nebulae/

It lists a whole load of nebula and which filter gives the best results on it. There's enough in there for months/years of viewing! Happy hunting :)
