  1. My husband known here to some of you as Freddie passed away earlier this morning, He knew this day would come  because he had been very ill for some time. He wanted me to make a last post for him in the event that it did. He is at peace now and with the stars he loved so much.

This is very sad news. Thank you for letting us know, and we hope you have some comfort from knowing he was a great asset to our community.

      Clear skies Freddie :(

  2. Dear Admins. I'm one of the two developers of the commercial Android app for Deep Sky observing the "DSO Planner". Thus I'm wondering are there any special rules besides the obvious "no advertisements"  for vendors on SGL forums? I finally have the capacity to provide my support here as well and see several questions already, though hesitating to jump in for rescue as I'm used to very harsh vendors' rules on the Cloudy Nights forum (which is my primary dwelling). Please, direct me.

      Hi Alex

Thanks for getting in touch and apologies for the delay in replying - the usual (best!) method is a direct PM, rather than via the public status....

We'll get right back to you!

      Cheers,

      Daz

  3. Hello everybody,  I have been a member for a while and never introduced myself or even posted. I am from North East US, I enjoy astronomy, horseback riding, woodworking, and this is the year I'm going to build a telescope. I've read a lot of post and learned a lot and I hope to contribute.

  4. I think the ZWO 1600MM is the first CMOS I've seen with a reasonable sensor size under £1k... Does it live up to the hype I've been hearing about it on here?

  5. Hi all is there anyone on here that would consider themselves to be an expert on astronomy/imaging setups and observatory setups? if so would you be interested in helping to setup my dads observatory and if so how much would you charge?

You are better off asking in the main forum Miky, instead of doing it via your status....

  6. Hi everyone!  I am trying to figure out my exposures for the solar eclipse.  I will be using 2 cameras (because I really love making things hard).  One full frame DSLR with a 24-105 lens for an eclipse in background landscape and a APS sensor DSLR with a 400 mm lens (which crops to a 640). I will be using Marumi DHG ND 100000 filters.  I am practicing and am having trouble reading the histograms.  Everything I see says "when the histrogram clips off" indicates the proper exposure. I have an image here - can someone who knows more about this look at the histogram and tell me if I am moving in the right direction?598141ca46997_sunf8125.thumb.jpeg.18aa564c782c1920a7264c82ac47a222.jpeg

Many thanks.  I am curious as to whether I am overexposing - the color is gone and I shot this in late afternoon when the sun appeared yellow.  I've never used a ND this intense before, but ND is not supposed to affect color, leading me to conclude I'm overexposing.  I have a few shots which appear more yellow, but the sun is muddy, obvious underexposure.  Advice welcome.

    Thank you.

    Jeannie

      Firstly, welcome to SGL!

You would be much better posting this in the main boards - Solar Imaging - will get you all the answers you need, in plenty of time to capture this great event!

      Thanks,

  11. Hi, I live on the Cheshire/North Wales border and am an amateur stargazer. My son has started an astrophysics degree in Leicester Uni and this has spurred me on to look more meaningfully at the heavens. I's like to get into photography and have my son's Skywatcher 150 and a Canon D650; hopefully enough to start!

  12. Hi, I'm new to astronomy & this forum. After a lot of reading I purchased an 8 inch Dobsonian, the scope is great, but I need to find somewhere dark without too much light pollution. I live in Basildon Essex.

  17. hi all, I was at my astronomy class tonight at roseland observatory in cornwall and our class went out side to view the sky as it started clearing up, at about 20:25 ish i saw a very big and bright object falling from the sky for a good 3-4 seconds and then turned orange and blew up. I think it was a piece of space debris falling, just wondering if anyone else caught a glimps of this object and if so where from and any pictures.
