Atik 414EX and 4120EX

Atik have announced two new cameras. This is an incredibly busy time of year for us so it will be a few more days before they appear at our website but here are the key points and specifications:

The venerable Sony ICX285 sensor with it’s excellent QE, minuscule dark current and relatively low cost has been a hugely popular CCD sensor for astronomy and, particularly when in the Starlight Xpress H9 and Atik 314L+, has done more to open up the world of astrophotography than any other sensor. But the ICX285 is now over 10 years old and things have evolved. The new generation of Sony sensors are better in every way with QE numbers that were previously unimaginable at their price and the legendary low noise characteristics have been retained and improved.
Atik’s latest camera uses the newest Sony sensor - the ICX825! This is not just fiddling with numbers, though it is the exact same size and resolution as the ICX285. The new CCD features the same EXview HAD CCD II technology present on CCDs used for the Atik 428/460/490 cameras, but with increased pixel size. This combination together with Atik electronics make it the most sensitive Atik camera available with a H-alpha performance 60% higher than the 314L+! For sensitivity this new camera surpasses even the KAF-3200 with the additional advantage of zero blooming.

Atik received requests for a higher pixel count Series 4 camera and, again, Sony came to the rescue. The new Atik 4120EX uses the 12MP ICX834 CCD so will be of most interest to Hyperstar owners and anyone else with a fast, short focal length telescope. Initially the Atik 4120EX will be available only as a One-Shot-Colour (OSC) camera but a mono version might be introduced if demand is high enough.

I was wondering if there would be a next gen for the smaller Atik chips coming along soon :) I look forward to hearing the prices of the 414 and I'm just wondering what will happen to the current prices of the 314's if anything?

I am looking at prices for the new cameras now so will post details in a few minutes

Based on the current currency exchange rates, Atik's RRP prices are:

Atik 414EX (Mono & OSC)  £1,137

Atik 4120EX (OSC)  £2,300

Those are RRP so we anticipate real-world prices to be a little lower.

HTH,

I can't believe you have done this to me FLO...After finally deciding to bite the bullet nd go for the 314L+ , you throw another candidate into the ring

We're bad  :angel12:

Joking aside, I confess we didn't know anything about these cameras. I was aware a new model was in the pipeline but it wasn't either of these... Indeed the first we heard about the Atik 414EX and 4120EX was when Atik emailed details last Friday and, because it is such a busy time of year, I didn't see the email until James mentioned it this morning

almost nothing it it price wise between the 314 and the 414. I'm in the process of putting together all the sundries at the moment and just got the 1.25" focus wheel. I'm guessing that will be fine with the 414?

The Atik 414EX uses the same nosepiece/CCD chamber as the 314L+ and has the same 13mm sensor-flange distance so anything you have bought for the 314L+ will work with the 414EX

I see the 414 has the same number of pixels of the same size as the 314L+ so the sensor will be the same size.  Definitely fine with 1.25" filters :)

I'm quite happy that the mono 460EX's ground is still safe having just bought a new one (making 3 in all) :D

For now Gina, for now

Result! I was just about to jump on the CCD train and narrowband. Had my eyes set on 460ex to go on my skywatcher evostar ed80 but would have to save a bit longer.

The 414ex hits my budget now. Trouble is do I wait a bit for the extra size of the 460ex?

A dilemma indeed :-$

Stick with the 460 for now, 414 sounds good but the sensor is still small, the other one is over priced for the sensor size.
