Lunt Ha Zoom Eyepiece

Recommended Posts

Guys,

Have any of you tried the Lunt Ha zoom eyepiece ? I am very interested in one.

It seems to be an accessory that comes with lots of new Lunt scopes. However, I never see any second hand for sale, is this an indication that they are pretty good ?

I would love to know your thoughts.

Shaun.

Shaun I have looked at both the Lunt zoom and the one that Michael recommended the TS HR Zoom. You can buy the Lunt from FLO for £139 and the TS HR is available from the German supplier via eBay at £120 + £12.50 post. Based on the small price difference together with customer support from FLO I would get the Lunt.

I have also looked at the Lunt as a possible binoviewer EP as they don't look too large (my nose is not that big!!!) and you can use them for both solar and general night viewing. I appreciate the FOV is narrower than normal EPs but ok for the Sun and I only use binoviewers for Planets and Doubles.

Let us know if you decide to buy and undertake a review. I am hoping to view them at the Leamington Astro Show in June.

Mark,

I am on the verge of purchasing the Lunt Zoom, the only detail that is still holding me back is the " Optimised for Ha" statement in the description. How & what with is my quandary.

I have read it is coated the same as the front etalons. I am just trying to find out a little more about it.

I guess we will not know until someone takes the plunge

I found one review so far

What the heck,

I took the plunge and have ordered the Lunt zoom from FLO - I managed to get it added to an order I placed on Saturday  thus no delivery costs.

FLO are a very honest team, they could have said the other order had been dispatched.  If I wore a hat I would take it off to them

As soon as the eyepiece arrives and the Sun graces us with its presence I will perform a review.

I will use each setting and compare to my range of Vixen SLV's that currently dominate my solar experience, so some tough competition indeed

If I get lucky with the weather I will perform some Lunar comparisons too.

I managed to find a secondhand Lunt in very good nick and for a very good price (cheaper than the TS, which is a lot cheaper than the Lunt here on the continent), so I pulled the trigger on it. Should arrive later this week, and hopefully I can compare it to the MaxVision 20mm, the MaxVision 24mm with 2x TeleXtender at 12mm, the Pentax XF8.5 and the XW10 (so stiff competition).

Regarding the "Optimized for H-alpha" bit, theoretically they could have matched a single coating to the H-alpha line, but that might actually be more expensive than using a multi-coating identical to the TS HR offering, and just rebadging them.

I use the Lunt zoom eyepiece with my Pressure Tuned 60mm and find that at low power settings it's prone to ghosting, apart from that it works very well.

LoL a bit late now

I doubt I will use it at anything above the 12mm setting as its use will be purely for solar, in addition I don't have any long focal length scopes anymore so I should be ok

By placing the zoom in one of the scopes in my dual set up, on low power, It will also assist in synchronising the two scopes, a stepped increase in magnification will help reduce the time it takes, a little like the process of fine tuning a GoTo mount.

Hmm. I'm still saving for a zoom eyepiece (it's been an expensive couple of months), and I had been thinking Hyperion Zooms as they're so popular, and there's so little info around on the Lunt Zoom. I would be very interested in what people make of them, so please post reviews! :)

Excellent news Michael, I am looking  forward to your review.

Unfortunately my Lunt zoom has been delayed for a whole week  on the bright side at least you are guaranteed lots of sunshine up until the day mine arrives

Watching this with interest , I use my Hyperion zoom in my Lunt and it outperforms all other eyepieces because you can zoom to get the Max out of the seeing conditions. I would like to see a comparison between the Lunt zoom and Hyperion. Reason is I'm looking at getting another so that I can dedicate one for solar and one for celestial , some days my one Hyperion only gets a few hours rest and I fear it will wear out :-)

After trying out this seben 24 to 8mm zoom in my lunt,I'm a bit disappointed. I've compared it too my 15 and 11mm tv plossls and the view in the zoom is not as sharp and contrasty. It's not bad....don't get me wrong but just not as pleasing. Also I have problems with blacking out if I don't have my eye VERY still in the exact place.

Would the lunt zoom be sharper than the seben?

I have just been informed my Lunt zoom will be here tomorrow   I believe the sun is due here Saturday so I will do a comparison with the Vixen SLV, that will give you a good idea of the sharpness as the Vixen SLV's are as sharp as razors
