First Jupiter with SPC900NC

Here are my first images of Jupiter with the Phillips SPC900NC, The CCD is a lot more sensitive than the CMOS Trust webcam I had been using, I imaged using a 2x barlow, then a 5x barlow, and then tried to get the Galilean moons overexposing Jupiter.

Excellent start! Now just swap out you over exposed Jupiter with a correctly exposed version then you will have an nice Jupiter and moons image (and your journey towards the dark side will be complete).

Is that a pukka SP900NC or the uprated Morgan Computers version?

I bought one of those and flashed it up to an SP900. Since then, the weather has been so bad I have hardly used it.

Good start there. You might want to try increasing the gain a little, which may help reduce the "onion ring" effect in the first image.

Brilliant! I agree with Rachel about the gain - it's low gain that causes the onion ring effect. Up the gain and if necessary drop the exposure a bit to compensate.

Thanks for the advice, I tried to use as little gain as possible, I guess this is just the steep learning curve!!

The moons will come when you get lots of images and stack them for the main planet. They just stack up into visibility. Trying to get them visible in each image will seriously overexpose Jupiter - as you have found.

Very nice images with good colour. I tried Jupiter the other night using my spc880(Flashed) and all I got was a white blob which I now know was overexposed from reading your post. What settings were you using on the camera? I can then use them as a starting point.
