That's pretty damn good if you are just holding it at the eyepiece - is that what you did?

Did you do anything to the image in editing software? You have got the craters near the terminator nice and sharp but you could adjust the brightness/contrast to tone down the glare on the left.

it was taken with a very basic 10mp digital camera , i think i need an slr

Hello amyscott. DSLR's are quite pricy (not super expensive but not cheap either) If you already have a laptop I would recomend using a small webcam like the Celestron NexImage CCD Solar System Imager or equivalent . Its small and lightweight and a lot less expensive than an slr. Nice first picture just the same.

That's a good sharp picture, even with a "basic" digital camera. As already suggested, try a cheap web cam, most members use the a modded Philips SPC, typical cost is about £10, plus £15 for a nose piece and some "tweeking" with some software. You can buy then ready modded off e-bay, I paid £30, there seems to be some silly prices at the moment, most probably due to the BBC stargazers program, so if you do look don't pay over the odds.

As for DSLR, much much more expensive and you might be disappointed. If you're after "bigger" images you may not get what you want as it's all down to the size of the sensor in the camera. This is a really good web site for showing what you can expect to see based on scope/camera/object http://www.12dstring.me.uk/fov.htm

Happy snapping...

Cheers

Neil
