Jupiter 17th April

HI all

No Saturn from last night because it was cloudy early on, but my struggle with Jupiter continues.

Maybe a slight improvement, but there's not much in it.

Details: SPX 200 Newt @ f24, toucam Pro 2 min AVI@ 10fps.

Right I'm off now to swap my ED100 for a C8.

Regards

Nick

Good image Nick. very difficult to pull any more out I would have thought. Interested that you went for 2 mins. I was under the impression that 45 secs was about the limit with Jupiter because of it's speed of rotation but maybe that's not the case. Would love to go for longer and get in more frames. Also interested that you use 10fps, do you find this the best compromise between number of frames and compression?

Hi Martin

You would do well to get anything done in 45secs, especially if you are using RGB filters.

Jupiter rotates about 0.3 arc secs per 60 seconds. The Dawes limit for resolution for an 8" scope is 0.6 arc secs. So, given perfect seeing with an 8" scope you should be able to image for two minutes without any blurring of the features. Of course, we don't have perfect seeing with Jupiter so you could probably take even longer AVIs.

10 fps? I don't know. I have only looked at Jupiter twice this year, and it maybe that using a higher frame rate and stacking more images produces better results.

Regards

Nick
