Four MW globular clusters

Hi folks, I imaged these on Sunday (19/4/09) and Tuesday (21/4/09) nights with my OMC140 and 20D. M3/M13 were imaged on Sunday night, when the seeing was better, and M53/M92 on Tuesday. The latter were much more of a processing challenge on account of their smaller size and lower brightness.

Here are the parameters for those of you interested in putting these things into context.

M          NGC/IC     Const         RA  (2000)    DEC           dist/Sun    dist/GC     Mag     Size
M3 NGC5272 Canes Ven 13:42:11.2 +28:22:32 33.9 kly 39.8 kly 6.19 18.0'
M13 NGC6205 Hercules 16:41:41.5 +36:27:37 25.1 kly 28.4 kly 5.78 20.0'
M53 NGC5024 Coma Ber 13:12:55.3 +18:10:09 58.0 kly 59.6 kly 7.61 13.0'
M92 NGC6341 Hercules 17:17:07.3 +43:08:11 26.7 kly 31.3 kly 6.44 14.0'

kly = thousands of light years

' = arc min

GC = galactic centre

A very nice collection, Dave - I especially like the M13. I normally enjoy taking images of these globulars but I have to say that my latest attempt at M3 on Tuesday night was a complete flop and I have yet to figure out what went wrong!

Well done anyway, great to see them nicely presented.

Thanks for the kind comments folks. Here is a montage of all four for quick comparison:

It's a shame more people overlook globs in favour of gas and galaxies so much. I remember being really inspired by shots of Omega Centauri, M13 and 47 Tucanae, reading Astronomy in the 1980s.
