Strumpit
I have been interested in this hobby for a while but never really got in to it. While tidying the loft the other week i found an old 700mm x 76 reflector (i must have bought it for my lads and forgot lol). It has a 20, 10 and 4mm eyepiece as well as a 2x, 5x barlow with a 1.25 erecting piece. The mirrors were very dirty so i took them out and cleaned them up. I then took it out and looked at the sun, it was not bad to my surprise. I got a laser collumator (i know but for me it is easier). It was so far out the laser did not appear on the primary and after a bit of mucking about i have now got it pretty decent. I took it out last night (there was cloud about) and managed to see the Moon, it was much better than i expected. I noticed a couple of bright 'stars' so had a look, i was extatic to see Jupitor and 4 moons as well as Saturn. Granted, as you can imagine, the images were not really clear but what a treat. I am tempted to get more equipment but i think its better if i find out if it keeps my attention for the long term. I cant believe how much i can see with such a cheap scope, more than happy! Cornelius Varley
Hello and welcome to SGL. 10 minutes ago, Strumpit said: I then took it out and looked at the sun, it was not bad to my surprise. I hope there was a suitable filter over the front of the telescope. NEVER LOOK AT THE SUN WITH A TELESCOPE WITHOUT THE USE OF AN APPROPRIATE FILTER. Floater
Welcome. Hope you have lots of fun but, as above, the Sun is a no-no without a proper filter. Take care and enjoy. 🙂 EDIT: just saw your reply 👍 Edited October 16, 2021 by Floater
