OMC140

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Anyone got one or had one ? I'm looking to order one purely for planetary observing and imaging but can't find many reviews on them apart from a few regarding the company so I'm undecided because of the reviews.

Thanks.

Basically they only respond to nights of good seeing conditions, when conditions are very good so are the views when seeing conditions are average the views wont be very good, if you could find one a Russian made maksutov would be a far better buy, and if i was looking at this size scope i would buy the Skywatcher skymax 150

I had an OMC 140 Hilux some years ago. It was a nice scope, but specialised with I think an F14 or so focal length.

It excelled on the moon, Jupiter and double stars on steady nights, but was sensitive to dewing up too without a long dewshield.

I liked it, but couldn't get good enough conditions to get the best from it in typical conditions where I lived at the time (industrial urban residential Midlands).

HTH,

Dave

Are you talking about buying one new Simon? They are a heck of a price, and will depreciate a huge amount, quite a risk if you find you don't get on with it.

They do come up used for a few hundred pounds, I think there is one on eBay currently with a starting bid of £200.

Yes looking to buy one, I'd love to have a look through one first really though before spending that amount of money.

On those rare nights of really great seeing my old OMC140 with the best optics and carbon tube could deliver outstanding incredibly sharp views. Unfortunately this only happened a couple of times a year. Under normal seeing conditions gave soft mushy views. Was super sensative to seeing. Got fed up and sold it on.

My Bresser 127 f15 mak will give sharper views 95% of the time and is much better day to day (night to night?) scope.

I know its a trek from Hampshire dude, but Rother Valley (near Sheffield)

have had a second hand OMC for sale for a while now.

Its not listed on their website (used items) so may have been sold.

Maybe worth giving Adam a call.......

also just keep in mind if you order from OO they will take your money, they will more than likely be very late on delivery and after sales will be poor

That's what I'm worried about.

OOUK do have some very long lead times. Back at Astrofest in Feb I put a deposit on an ODK12, and after a flurry of emails regarding options things went quiet. I rang John last week to find out how things were going and he said that my mirror was next to go on the machine for figuring. TBH in my case I wasn't too worried, as this is a long term project and in any case I was waiting for my house to sell (Another tale of woe) before I could safely complete on this. But even so, the lead times are a bit long, though at this level the telescopes are pretty well built to order.
