Looks like I will be hunting SN2018PV in NGC 3941

Just got alerted to a new post in "Latest Supernovae": SN 2018 PV in NGC 3941

Both the galaxy and SN should be easy in my C8, and it is CLEAR!!!

I just plotted some charts in the AAVSO tool. A three degree as seen through the RACI finder:

1 degree mirror image as seen through the diagonal with my 31T5

And a 0.5 deg one as seen through the Delos 14mm, with the galaxy superimposed:

Might also chase the earlier one: SN 2018 GV, same set of charts:

Once you have found the galaxy. You’ll need plenty of mag to separate the SN from the core.

Just bagged both supernovae! Both were harder than their magnitudes would make it appear. SN2018gv is low in the sky, and SN2018pv is close to the Seyfert core of NGC 3941, making for a very difficult split. Managed both at 145x with the Delos 14mm, and at 203x with the Pentax XW10. Well pleased! 

Also bagged three new galaxies.

Sounds like a great night Michael. Does the SN in NGC3941 look like a double core? I’m imaged the galaxy earlier but wasn’t sure if I got it or not?

It does look to me like a double core

I also had a look. To be honest the core just looked extended. I cannot say I split it. Perhaps just seeing or the fact others have better mirrors than mine. ?

Initially, the core look extended to me too, especially at 93x with the Nagler 22mm. It seemed slightly offset from the centre. I have seen NGC 3941 under much better conditions, and the stellar core seemed to be dead centre in the galaxy. I didn't know at the time it was a Seyfert galaxy, but when I saw it first I immediately guest it was. This time the core seemed less tight, a somewhat elongated, and slightly offset. Only after some patience did I get some intermittent periods of better seeing, and did I consistently pick up two stellar objects oriented roughly east-west, flickering in and out of view, but only at higher magnification.

I went looking for NGC 3941 with the Heritage 130P last night. The galaxy is quite easy to find almost 40% along a line from Alula Borealis to Chara in Canes Venatici. The galaxy is within a triangle with a 4 sided polygon nearby.

Although only a 5 inch Newt I am pretty certain I could see something which I felt was the galaxy. The sky was dark and transparent - no light pollution (M1 was easy - my sky test with the 5 inch). The smudge appeared to have a brighter part - was this the SN? I started with the 11mm ES82 (59X) then switched to the TeleVue 8-24 zoom (81X) then added a Baader Barlow 2.25x which allowed me to go to 183X.

I wish I had set up the 12 inch Dob but I did not get home very early so I had to make do with the Heritage.

Hopefully, it will be clear on Thursday to have a good attempt with the 12 inch Dob.

Don't worry Mark  - 5" might be a bit hopeful. The galaxy will jump out in your 12". It has a nice compact bright core. The SN is a similar brightness but a bit smaller in the eyepiece.

Lay down some magnification 200-250x should do it!
