ollypenrice
I really don't think I've ever observed Almach (gamma Andromedae) before. How can this be? A terrible oversight, now rectified! In large-ish aperture (14 inch) I found the colours more intense than Albireo and since the double is tighter the colour contrast was more striking. A wonderful sight. DOn't miss it. Moonshane
Agreed Olly. It's a stunner
Craney
Yes I agree, people get heavily obsessed with the DSO's, planets, Sun.... and the the beauty of a multicoloured binary is often overlooked. There should be more posted images .. with a good set of diffraction spikes as well to show that a star is a star.... Any good websites that show the good ones ?? Sean. chiltonstar
Doubles really do show colour (cf faint fuzzies!) which for me is part of the attraction.....although I must admit I'm an Izar man myself... Chris Chris
johnfosteruk
I too have not observed Almach, but you've sold me Olly. Straight to the top of the next target list.

Can't really get into them. But, the coloured ones are great. Normally, I'd just go to @cotterless45's observing reports and grab a few doubles targets. Nick will, no doubt, have some ideas. In the meantime, here are a couple of bright coloured doubles lists. http://www.eaglecreekobservatory.org/eco/doubles/contrast.html http://users.compaqnet.be/doublestars/#titc Paul
jetstream
Almach is fantastic and is always on the list. I also find the lure of Izar irresistible.
Craney
Thanks Paul, the second link has a rating system and descriptions.... Excellent. " Eta Persei This is the topmost star of Perseus. It's a marvelous bright gold and little blue double, easily separated. A lot of stars glitter in this area." That is definitely worth a photo. Sean. cotterless45
Almach is a stunner. Here you go, http://users.compaqnet.be/doublestars/ Some real showcases here. At the moment top colour , the single "Garnet star" , easy at the base of Cepheus and the green and blue companions to the triple set in nearby IC 1396. For best colour 4" aperture is cracking. Defocussing will show you a blast of colour , try the "Garnet" ! Remember that colour is very subjective as you read observing reports. A friend came up the other night as saw colours from grapefruitorange to lime green, fruitful session ! Nick.
