Hi. 300mm is great for the Andromeda galaxy and the Orion nebula but anything else will need something with a longer focal length. Why not do more widefield stuff? E.g. 200mm will fit both the orion and the horsehead and 50mm the whole consellation. HTH.

A prime lens is one that has no zoom it is a fixed length.

Your 140mm length would be good to use. A 135mm prime is a frequent length used on here.

You already have a lens to use, set that at the longest length and get started.

The longer the lens the more demanding it will be on your mount. What mount do you have to use?

i have celestron 130eq...but it is very difficult 2 take pictures with that as it is heavly shaking...if i attach camera it is coming one side...so i thought of taking with my dslr alone as i got good images b4...

Unless you have a motor on that mount then any really stable tripod would do. If you have no motor then you would be better placed using your widest shortest length lens nearer 18mm end. You might expect 20 second exposure before star trailing using 18mm on your camera lens.
