Cheap way of experiencing the journey through the solar system using Virtual Reality

Recommended Posts

Guys you should try this stuff!
Exploring solar system using VR technology in a very cheap way (using smartphone + google cardboard).
There is an application that places you in the middle of the spaceship similar to the crystal ball from the latest Jurassic Park movie.
You take a guided tour through the most important objects in the solar system rendered in 3D with photo-realistic textures and since it is used with VR kit you can look around as you were inside the spaceship.

There is only one obstacle, it works on Android phones only

Here is what you need:

1. Android smartphone with a screen between 4-6" (I'm using Nexus 5)

2. VR Kit
You can get one here for less then 20 quid (that's the one I have)

That one come with blue-tooth RC which comes handy although not necessary:

they also sell them on Amazon:

3. Google Cardboard app:

I just bought my nephew the VR 380 BOX (in black) headset today. 40 euros. I tried it out in the store and i liked it. I've just been trying some free stuff downloaded online on my own phone (Sony Xperia E3..or is it E5....full HD) using the headset. I'm loving it. The remote control is dead handy.

Shouldnt it be 360 instead of 380?

Cant go wrong for 40 euros. Its very well constructed. Doesnt feel of look flimsey/plasticy. Nice comfortable padding around the eyes/nose. The view finder screen can be moved in or out so everyone who uses it can get a sharp focus (eye relief). Not great though if you absolutely need to wear glasses. I dont so it is fine.

I'm thinking maybe i love it too much to give it to my nephew. There is literally tonnes of free stuff (games, movies etc) online to keep you entertained for a long time. If you feel the need to buy a full VR game to download to your smartphone.........they are cheap and look great.

You can also try flying to all the planets at the speed-of-light here for free:

Buckle your seat-belts,

Dave

The speed of light is so slow! :D

I've picked up a cardboard pair from PCworld/Currys for one of the stockings!

I'm impressed that even the American astronaut is amazed. ;)
