Telrad - Worth It?

I already have a finder scope so would a Telrad really be worth it? What would be the benefits of having one?

I was wondering the same thing... I have a red dot finder and a illuminated cross hair 9x50 finderscope. Between those two I always find my targets... I don't see the benefit of also getting a telrad.

I find it a great benefit as it is non magnifying and allows a far greater view of the sky. This may sound daft, but it has taken me a while to find the full moon with a straight through 6x30, with the telrad - straight there [emoji3]

I don't use a Telrad, but the similar Rigel finder in conjunction with a RACI 9x50. The Rigel gets me in the right spot and the magnified view of the RACI lets me fine tune and with star hoping in my medium LP environment.

+1 for Uplooker. I have a Telrad on my 200P, it makes things a lot, lot easier, especially if you print off some Telrad charts. Spend time aligning the Trad with the Rd and finderscope and you won't look back!

I've seen a few people mention it on here so thought I'd have a look to see what it was lol does look like a good bit of kit, think I'll see how it goes with the finder scope for now

+1 for the Telerad,

Easy to use, even for aligning my scope on CDC ready for imaging.

I find the circles easier to use and it's not quite so critical where your eye is to see the circles. I find the red dot on an eq mount sometimes difficult to get your eye in the right place.

I like the Telrads but only use them on my larger scopes (usually dobs over 10"). On the smaller ones I stick with Raci's or RDF's. Just personal preference really.

When observing the sun do you need to cover up the Telrad ie. will any damage to its reticle be done if left in "night mode" ?

Yes, most definitely, cover the telrad There is a high probability that it will damage it
