First light with Lunt 60mm

Well i have just been staring in awe for the last hour or so at our nearest star with my first Solar scope. blumming fantastic and it seems the longer you look the more detail pops into view. Very enjoyable.

One interesting thing, observing a prominence on the western limb (excuse my terminology as i'm new to solar observing) it seemed to pop into view nicely when in the fov to the right but as the sun travelled across the eyepiece to the left it dimmed. The same with the surface, different positions in the eyepiece produced different results. Is that normal?

Also i was using a tele view 20mm eyepiece which gave a nice all round view but would like to ramp up for looking at the prominences, can anyone recommend a good eyepiece between 10-20mm for solar observing?

All in all though a great experience and looking forward to many nice sunny days in the garden with a beer or two and my Lunt.

Congrats on getting your first light in that great little scope. Regarding EPs, many like the TS HR Planetary zoom 7.2-21.5mm (same as the Lunt zoom). I use my Nagler 12T4, Pentax XW10 and XF8.5 a lot, but that may be overkill (hey, if you have the EPs use them). Radians or the SLV EPs are also interesting for this work, and have good eye relief.

Sounds like you are describing the "sweet spot", if so, then yes, this is to be expected. With more time at the eyepiece you will become familiar with the best place to position the sun in the eyepiece so that it is in the sweet spot. turning the tuner can move the sweet spot (but you may lose some of the detail) - you need to play around and find the best match.

As for eyepiece, my preference is to start with 12mm which provides a nice size image of the sun (one that fits in the sweet spot) and switch to 10mm when seeing permits. I find anything less than 14mm makes the sun too small.

If you make the sun too big then you have to chase it with the scope, letting it drift across the view is quite nice.

I am chuffed for you owning this really nice specialist scope pragmatist, its obviously an amazing instrument.  This thread only makes me think I want to save for one (my wallet just scurried over into the corner and hid behind the chair).  I look forward to more viewing reports...

Whats the minimum mount this scope needs to be on ?

All the best.

Congrats on your new scope

They are excellent don't you think ?

I have not noticed a sweet spot on my Lunt the Sun seems pretty even once set, the more I have used it the better I have become at tuning.

The best eyepiece I have used is the Vixen 9mm SLV cost £109 from FLO, very impressive.

Hi Jabeoo1,

Not sure the minimum required but i am using the ioptron minitower V2. I suspect a good solid video tripod would work ok if you dont mind manual tracking.

I would think that the EQ3-2 is a good match if you want the tracking option.

Glad you like it. Mine arrived the other day but I haven't had a chance to bring it out to play yet. It is a beautiful looking scope.

I have pretty similar set up to yours so I too am looking forward to a few long sessions with a few cold brews and, taking inspiration from Michael, maybe the odd solar lunch at work.

Enjoy...
