sbooder
But I want to go back to the black Synta grease for my mounts worm gear. I know many think that it is dreadful stuff but I now think it is the only grease that will stay in place and it is intended to eliminate as much backlash as possible. So do any of us know what it is called and where it can be found please? ChrisLX200
OK, I stopped laughing. If it's black then it's got molybdenum disulphide in it - and maybe other things too but that would be the active component of a high pressure grease. However you should not rely on grease to eliminate backlash (not that it would anyway). There are better lubes than simple greases - even MbS loaded ones - for a precision component like a telescope worm drive. A Teflon based lube might be better. I used this stuff the last time I serviced my G11 gears:http://www.amazon.co.uk/Quantum-Hot-Reel-Grease-Red/dp/B002QY56VQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389771683&sr=8-1&keywords=Quantum+Hot+Reel+Greaseit's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but I found it works very well.ChrisH
sbooder
I have Teflon grease on at the moment but when I stripped the mount down again all the grease was pushed to the ends of the worm leaving none along its length where it is needed, to me this defeats the object. And grease does help eliminate backlash, of course in conjunction with well meshed gears.I have pretty much made my mind up. So if anyone knows the name of the grease Synta uses please let me know, thank you.

Zakalwe
Paramount recommend engine assembly lubricant for their worm wheels.http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/170018-re-greasing-mount-grease/?p=2144258
stoffe
I think that will be perfect, but black? In my NEQ6Pro I have transparent grease with no black color. I think you can find suitable grease at your local model RC-shop.

Peter Drew
I used Rocol Advanced Lubricants "Kilopoise" grease for all my gear sets before I retired, never had any problems apart fom increased stiffness of operation durind very cold weather. I might go with this first. Someone has to try these things and report back.
sbooder
I think with the Rocol Tuflube Allweather on the worm, Teflon grease on the taper bearings and keeping the grease that is already in the other bearings it should work out well. I would not put the Rocol Tuflube Allweather in the bearings as this would affect the balancing of the scope and weights but as the whole worm assembly rotates on the bearings when the clutch is off it should work OK with this combination of greases.
