M74

M74 in its natural habitat since this really won't stand up at full size. We lost an awful lot of luminance subs to focus drit, unfortunately. I was very busy on these nights and couldn't watch over this one (Yves' 14 inch ODK) as carefully as I should have done. Still, we have a picture of the little blighter;

This had 8x15 L and 7x15 per colour. I made a synthetic L from the colour data to help out the short luminance run.

Edit. Ouch, the background sky looks a mess on here. It was OK in Ps on my monitor. I'll have a look at that!

It'd be better without the gradient and dark halos

My images often seem to get an extra stretch on uploading, so when you sort it, I would appreciate a few pointers

We've decided to go for more data and try to do it properly. Odd about the gradient and dark halos because I can't see them in PS.

very nice Olly. I saw (or rather detected) this for the first time last night from Stockport with my 12" dob. It was pretty tough though and really faint. looking forward to seeing it from somewhere darker.

I think it's a monitor calibration thing. It looks perfect on my monitor at work but I know that normally displays a bit dark.

It seems that the transition to JPEG has brought this up. The TIFF is clean.

Very nice. Looking it up on Wikipedia, I see M74 has the lowest surface brightness of any Messier object.

Nice galaxy Olly, background looks a bit noisy indeed.

You can also consider NGC1232 looks pretty much the same but may be brighter and not often imaged.
