geppetto
You can tell I'm bored cause of the weather Anyway decided to make a smaller spectrometer than the one I made in a woodenbox using a CD disc for the grating..Sent off to Surplus Shed for an adjustable optical slit anda grating mounted on a glass slide.Been Aralditing a 1.25" eyepice tube to one end of the optical slit so that at somepoint, I can mount it in the scope.Meantime, I mounted the bits either end of a cardboard tube to have a test runand the two components give a nice spectrum in white light.Manage to take a picture through the grating with my D40..Here are the links to the componentshttp://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/m1570d.htmlhttp://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/m1569d.htmlMore to follow when/if I get it all to work on the scope

geppetto
Another shot, another spectrumThis time the light from a low energy light bulb. The grating works well, clearly showing the different spectrumto that of white light.
lunator
Phil interesting shot. Bulbs looks very stron in the green & red.
AstroTiger
it would be interesting to see how that would work against the starshas anyone else done this/tried this?Alk
geppetto
it would be interesting to see how that would work against the starsIt's looking promisingLast night I held the bits of the spectrometer against the eyepiece (reallly needed three hands)Eyepiece projected Arcturus into it and looking through the grating, there was a spectrum.A bit dim but there, should be able to pull it out with the camera.. In the meantime, a few more spectrums taken with the D40
mikkey99
Looking good PhilYou`ll have to post a build your own spectrometer thread so we can all have a goMike
Astroman
You've got emission spectra nicely, but the interesting stuff is in the absorption spectra. Can you spread the spectrum out any more? Maybe change the distance from the grating to the slit?
geppetto
Can you spread the spectrum out any more? Not sure yet AM, need to setup the stuff on a "test bench" to alter parameters.Struggling trying to hold all the bits to be honest... Good fun and it's all helping grandaughter with her school science stuff as well
themos
This is an exciting development for amateur stargazers. Gratings or Fabry-Perot interferometers, though?
