Skywatcher Esprit ED APO Triplets have arrived!

Don't expect big APO to scale to low prices + if they would made a cheaper one it would kill the brand strength of the better one (China has the problem of beeing seen as cheap and poor quality China quite easily).

This is the perceived problem, but it isn't true.

China can make rubbish, but it can also make excellence. They will make whatever that are asked to make.

If you send China a design with a flaw in it, they will make the finished product with the flaw. If you ask China to make a product to a price then that's exactly what they will do...

China will make as good a product as anyone else in the world, but expect it to cost the same as anywhere else in the world.

Partly evidenced by the wide variety of various telescopes from a wide variety of manufacturers that ultimately all come out of the same stable...

ED80, Equinox 80, WO GT81, Orion USA ED80T CF...

I have no doubt that the Espirit ED APO Triplets will be very nice indeed!

All the best,

Mike

But they don't Mike. The scopes you mention all come from China or Taiwan but come from different manufacturers.

Im curios as to the relevance of the quality and the average seeing conditions of the observing site.

How much better an image will same spec different manufacturer scopes make, there must be a point where it all gets very subjective.

Bulid Quality however especially the focuser seems to be where the money goes if Optics are the same.

Go further down the supply chain. They're all made in the same factory, aren't they? I was chatting about this with Bern @ MA last week - I can't remember the name of the factory but they produce all the scopes mentioned.

All the best,

Mike

I agree with that but just to add that some of the cash also goes towards marketing the brand, too. And don't forget the perceived value too :-)

Kunming Optics is one manufacturer. But also one must remember that these companies make optics to specification, the more specialised spec - more the cost.

Which one of you is going to order that 100ED Patzval as I want to play with it !! :p

Nadeem.

Thanks Nadeem,

I think it was that one and I also think that it's time we started a separate thread for this discussion.

Before I go though, I thought this was amusing:

"APO tirplet objectives design" and "Hand figured with traditional low polishing technology" and "Fully multi coating" ;)

I can't see a 120mm APO on their website though.

Has anyone in the UK got one, yet? Is FLO going to get one for in-the-shop or for rental?

All the best,

Mike

Thats a good idea, but I think the thread should have constructive input & discussion, im sure the Mods won't mind ?

RE earlier post - will they be producing a cheaper 150ED doublet, asked SW and the rep said he had "not heard of plans in that direction as yet" - oh well, worth a try!

That's what I was considering too. Don't understand SW on this, think they may have missed a trick by not offering a cheaper 150ED version.

Even if I did have the cash, I could'nt justify the price of the Espirit 150 just for observing. I would have had to upgrade the mount too, so whilst it's a shame I'm happy sticking with my current 100ED set-up for now:rolleyes:

No they're not, I think Bern is barking up the wrong tree there. As Nadeem points out, KUO is one, but there's a fair few others. Google is your friend, sometimes :p.

No sign of dealers in the UK selling these then?

Sky Watcher Quantum 120ED - Craig & Tammy Temple | SmugMug

That looks seriously nice... especially if those pacman pics were taken with it.

Is there any specs for this about anywhere?

Do SW often release products in some countries but not others? That seems strange given the investemnt cost in getting it to market in the first place?
